Autumn 1 2025
Dear Grazebrook Families
We have had a fantastic start to the autumn term, with children settling quickly into routines and embracing new learning opportunities. Year 3 have been enjoying the rhythms of djembe drumming, while Year 4 have begun lessons in flute, violin and guitar. Our youngest learners in Early Years and Key Stage 1 have been making the most of the autumnal weather, exploring the changing seasons and discovering more about living things in our school grounds and wider community.
Across the school, children from Year 1 to Year 6 are focusing on developing their geography fieldwork skills this half term. They will be venturing into our local green spaces to strengthen their understanding of maps and topography, as well as learning how geographers gather data and information to build a clearer picture of the world around us.
Our family events have now begun with Year 1 families joining us for Come Dine With Me and Year 6 families sharing books together at our first Reading Breakfast. A huge well done to Team Year 2 for hosting the first Learning Celebration of this academic year. The children shared their geography knowledge of the continents, seas and oceans with confidence and flair. Thank you to all the families who came along to see the show!
Our Come Learn With Me events this term will have an art and design theme and children will be demonstrating our values of kindness and collaboration by fundraising for an international children's charity of their choice. All other upcoming family events can be found in the key dates section below and on our school website calendar.
You will also have received communications from our amazing Parent Staff Association (PSA), Friends of Grazebrook, regarding key dates on their calendar for this term. Thank you to those of you who were able to attend their first meeting. It was fantastic to have so many families present. On Friday 10th October at 3.30pm, they will be hosting a fancy dress exchange in preparation for a Non-Uniform Fundraiser on Friday 24th October. This will have a Halloween theme for those children who wish to dress up. Those that do not wish to dress up may come to school in their own clothes and celebrate themselves. Please save the date for our Winter Fair which will take place between 12-3pm on Saturday 6th December.

Across Nursery and Reception, we have been so impressed by how quickly the children have settled and have been enjoying learning together inside and outside their classroom. The children have been exploring the signs of autumn as well as teaching each other about themselves and their families. We have particularly loved seeing all the children's self portraits and seasonal art work on display in their classrooms.
Year 1 loved reading the book Beegu together. They used story maps to retell the story and made freeze frames of the main events before writing a story of their own. We love that the children are already using so many impressive adjectives to describe the characters in the books they are reading and the stories they are writing.
In computing lessons in Year 2, the children have been learning to differentiate technology based on its properties. They have demonstrated their understanding using talk, drawings and written explanations.
Year 3 have been reading Leon and the Place Between and using the text to inspire their own story writing. The children used role-play and freeze-frames to explore the characters and settings in the book before using their creativity to develop their own story. Year 3 have also been reading Grandpa Bert and the Ghost Snatchers, and debating whether it is kind for Grandma to be called odd.
Year 4 have been very busy developing their understanding of the place value of 4-digit numbers using dienes and place value counters as well as rounding and solving tricky addition and subtraction calculations. They have really enjoyed their class book Race to the Frozen North by Catherine Johnson and have been asking and answering a range of questions such as, 'What makes a good explorer?'. In geography, the children have been exploring how longitude, latitude and coordinates can be used to describe the direction of a place.
Across Year 3 and 4, the children have begun their instrumental lessons, with Year 3 getting to grips with djembe and Year 4 exploring the violin, flute or guitar. The children will be showcasing their new skills as part of the winter concerts later this term.
Year 5 have been investigating rates of dissolving in science. They designed their own fair test, gathered results and presented their conclusions. The children have also been demonstrating fantastic collaboration in PE, playing benchball as part of their dodgeball unit.
In Year 6, the children have been getting to grips with digits up to ten million! They used counters to represent place value and compared 7 digit numbers using greater than and less than and by placing them in ascending and descending order.
The Key Stage 2 children were visited by some of the construction workers who were responsible for installing the solar panels on the school roof over the summer holiday. They loved watching drone footage of the roof before and after the work and learning about the amount of energy that will be generated by the panels. The children asked fantastic questions about how the panels work and really impressed our visitors.
Year 2 and Year 5 took part in fire safety workshops led by the London Fire Brigade. The children learnt essential safety tips through interactive drills and by role-playing scenarios. This helped them to understand how to stay safe in case of a fire. A big thank you to the London Fire Brigade for such informative and exciting sessions!
We are very proud of the Year 6 Reading Ambassadors who presented to a group of teachers and school leaders at our first English Hub Conference of the year. The children spoke passionately about their love of reading, recommended books, explained how they encourage everyone to read and what children in other schools can do to champion and celebrate reading.
Finally, we wanted to give a big shout out to our families who are part of the Grazebrook Athletic squad. With families from other schools in the area, they have formed a local football league and donate some of their match fees to the PSA. They were victorious in their first game of the season and with more games to be played, we will be cheering them along to hopefully reach the top of the league and become the local champions.
