CKLA: Reading, Writing, and More: At New Vision, we use the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA). As their website states, CKLA is "A comprehensive Preschool–Grade 5 program for teaching skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, Core Knowledge Language Arts™ also builds students’ knowledge and vocabulary in literature, history, geography, and science." Grammar Sayings and Phrases are also embedded in this rich curriculum. amplify.com/
Math: At New Vision Charter School, our goal is for students to master the Colorado Academic Standards and to become life-long lovers of math! In order to do this, we utilize the Envisions 2.0 curriculum. This is a new curriculum to our school, staff and students this year. www.savvas.com/
Writing: Using the curriculum, Step Up to Writing we teach the students how to plan, organize, and write several different genres. This curriculum provides them a systematic, clear approach to utilize anytime they need to produce written work. www.voyagersopris.com/products/writing/step-up-to-writing/overview
Social Studies/Science: We meet the Colorado and Common Core Standards by teaching the "listening and learning" curriculum from CKLA along with other supplemental materials to make these subjects the most engaging, fun, and meaningful as possible. We try to bring subjects "to life" with activities such as, Greek Day, Pioneer Day, and a living museum just to name a few.
We will also be researching, experimenting, having hands-on learning as much as we can in our science units.
Behavior Expectations:
House Points - At New Vision Charter School we participate in the house system as a whole campus! All 2nd graders are in the Timios House. Students will be sorted as 4th graders to determine their house for the rest of their time at NVCS. We teach students the characteristics of each house during the first few weeks of school. Students can earn house points for themselves while contributing to the good of the whole house. We emphasize the six pillars of character from the Character Counts curriculum. As an elementary school, we focus on one character trait per month.
PURPOSE AND VISION :
The ultimate goal is to bring unity and a sense of belonging.
It makes our big school feel smaller and gives avenues for cross-grade team building and collaboration
The House Games bring joy, life, and fun into our community
Tracking points encourages students that their good character builds into their larger community
Awarding quarterly house winners and annual House Cup build excitement
