Khramis Didi Gora is a large Neolithic Village located in the Khrami River valley in Kvemo Kartli, southern Georgia. It is one of the most significant sites associated with the Shomu-Shulavery culture, dating to around 6000 BCE.
The site was first excavated in the 1970–1980s by Georgian archaeologists. These early investigations revealed a large and complex settlement featuring circular mudbrick houses, hearths, and a rich assemblage of ceramics, obsidian tools, and bone artefacts, suggesting an advanced farming and craft-producing community.
After decades of inactivity, archaeological work resumed in 2023, with new excavations aiming to re-examine old trenches, analyse stratigraphy more closely, and recover new material. The renewed investigations are contributing to updated understandings of settlement organisation, subsistence practices, and social structures within the broader Neolithic landscape of the South Caucasus.
Khramis Didi Gora stands out due to its large size (estimated 4–5 hectares), long occupation span, and rich material culture, making it a key site for understanding the Neolithization of the region and its connections with Anatolian, Mesopotamian and Iranian Neolithic societies.
In October 2023, archaeological work resumed at Khramis Didi Gora after a 40-year break. The main task of this season was to clean the previously excavated area and study the southern profile. After cleaning and dividing the profile into layers, samples were collected. Research at Khramis Didi Gora was carried out within the framework of a summer school, funded by the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia under the "Mobility and International Scientific Events" (Lot II) 2023 call (MG-ISE-23-1261). Alongside field practice, participants of the field school also had the opportunity to attend lectures by leading researchers on the processes of Neolithization.

Excavations at Khramis Didi Gora were renewed in 2023, marking the beginning of a new phase of systematic research at the site. In May 2025, a new 10 × 10 meter excavation square was opened, targeting previously unexplored areas of the mound. In part of this trench, we reached well-preserved Neolithic layers, characterized by mud-brick architectural remains and a rich assemblage of material culture, including bone tools, lithic artifacts, and other domestic objects. The investigation of the Neolithic occupation at Khramis Didi Gora is ongoing and will resume in October 2025.
