The New Ulm High School's Chapter of the National Honor Society began in 1941. Over the years the selection process to become a member of the society has changed many times. The current selection process goes as such:
- During the first week of October eligible Juniors and Seniors are invited by letter to submit a portfolio for consideration. In order to be eligible the student must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
- The student must submit a personal narrative.
- The student must complete the National Honor Society Service Sheet (a minimum of 30 documented service hours is required).
- The student must complete the National Honor Society Activity sheet.
- Once all materials are submitted the student is ranked on a Likert scale form 1-10 (1 being low, 10 being high) by the faculty of NUHS in terms of Character and Leadership.
- The Faculty Council reviews all the information and makes the final judgement.
- The Induction Ceremony is the first Monday evening in December.
