What is The Alternative Program? - The Alternative Program (TAP) at Newtown High School offers an alternative high school experience for students with diverse learning profiles, backgrounds, and goals. Designed for those who have completed at least one year of high school and for whom the traditional setting is not suitable, TAP provides a smaller environment with reduced class sizes and a condensed school day from 10:00 am to 2:32 pm, Monday through Friday. The program includes both academic and vocational components, taught by certified teachers, and aligns with Newtown High School's curriculum. TAP students must meet the same credit and graduation standards to earn their diploma. Graduates pursue various paths, such as employment, military service, technical school, community college, or a four-year college. TAP supports students with smaller classes, a positive community, vocational opportunities, one-to-one technology, access to NHS electives, and Pupil Personnel Services.
