Newton High School's Broadway night offers students opportunities to perform

Newton High School students put on a fantastic event called Broadway Night. Students perform a variety of songs from their favorite Broadway productions on this night. Involvement in Broadway Night is open to all students! Many people mistakenly believe that because they are not enrolled in the theater program, they are unable to participate.

Last year's Broadway Night was the first in four years. People are still unsure what it is and whether or not they should participate as a result. The date for this year's Broadway Night was May 23. This year, the show consisted of 18 songs. The performance takes place in the high school auditorium.

The seniors in the theater department host Broadway Night. Allison Iliff is the host this year, assisted by Yoshi Grasso and Jazira Faines. In a recent interview with The Brave Bulletin, Alli Illif stated "As we continue this tradition, we get more and more participants! We are very short on time this year, so we will have one practice before show time." Anyone interested in Musical Theatre should join Broadway Night next year! It's a fantastic opportunity to sing some of your favorite Broadway songs. Even if you don't perform, you should come out to support the theater department and cheer on your classmates!

FBLA leaving its astonishing mark from this school year

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) had a great year, with many amazing opportunities throughout this year. With those opportunities they were able to travel and compete. For the remainder of the school year, FBLA is taking eight Newton High School students, and they are going to Atlanta Georgia for their national competition. They will not be just competing, they will be site seeing, explorations, to grow from not only the classroom but to grow from experiences.

One of the biggest achievements this year was the news about FBLA, how it has grown around the school, how it is spreading from student to student, leading many individuals to want to join FBLA. Another great achievement this year was the State Leadership Conference, which is located in Atlantic City. The club doubled the place of students who succeeded and placed which is always FLBA advisor, Mrs. Iliff’s goal. Every student in this school has something to compete in, they do not have to be an honor student, an academically inclined student, they could be the creative art student, or the student with the great personality. Everything FBLA does is inclusive to every student, and the success of the students is what drives FBLA to keep going.

I asked Mrs. Iliff what she would say to any newcomers that might think of joining FBLA and she said “Join FBLA! I will show you everything and I will show you everything you can be, that you don’t believe you can be.'' This hits close to home for Mrs. Iliff, due to the fact she has a learning disability of her own, but instead of letting that bring her down, it lifted her up, and created a space for everyone, disability or not to be in a space like FBLA.

The students' success is what makes going to these events lively, it is not mainly about competing, it is not about winning, it would be the success that each individual student has in the program. FBLA is a home to everyone wanting to join or already in it!

Newton students to receive recognition at 94th New Jersey State FFA Convention

The Newton High School FFA chapter has thirty-three students that are going to Monmouth University in Long Branch, New Jersey on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 24th, and runs until noon of Friday the 26th to attend The FFA State Convention.

Many of our students who placed 1st-3rd in this year's competitions will be receiving awards. We also have 9 state FFA degree recipients. We have students competing in various "sessions" hosted by NJ FFA happening. The students competing are Stephen Miller, Cora Bermingham, Jack Boffa, Camilo Rodriguez, Eraldo Aguilar, Abby Biederman, Kelsey Snellen, and Emily Milej. They are competing in various competitions ranging from public speaking to job skills along with a quiz bowl.

At the sessions, there is a ton of recognition for NJ FFA members. Students who have competed and placed well will be recognized, scholarships will be announced, keynote speakers will speak to students, and much more. We have 9 State FFA Degree recipients this year which include Bruno Groth, Jacob Knehr, Savannah Yarlaski, Asher Haiduc-Dale, Frank Boffa, Evan Parker, Kelsey Snellen, Abigail Biederman, and Ava Bryski. The State FFA Degree is the highest degree New Jersey FFA can award its members.

These students have done many things in agriculture and leadership for the last 2 years to earn this. It is all about recognizing FFA members for their accomplishments and supporting each other while learning something new! There is a lot of opportunity for our students to engage themselves in new things. A national FFA officer will be in attendance and some of our students will get the chance to attend a leadership workshop hosted by them.

However, State Convention isn't just about competitions and awards but the members will have the opportunity to participate in several leadership workshops and other community service events. This year's service events include a 5k, and a service project to be shared with us when we arrive, known as the FFA Day of Service. Thursday night our members will have the opportunity to attend an FFA dance, which is a huge hit every year, Newton, sort of, brings the energy!
