Newton Braves: An unstoppable force takes other football teams by storm

by Jordan Short

Last year the Braves said goodbye to some star senior players, which according to head coach Matt Parzero was a smooth transition after working through the past comfort level and lack of varsity experience from some players. “The whole senior class has really stepped up and our 4 captains, Brayden Nolan, Matthew McLean, Pasquale Festa, and Thaylor Sibblies have gone above and beyond,” Coach Parzero exclaimed.

The senior class are not the only stars who have been noticed, but a lot of the younger players too, “Demarius Posey, Matthew Teets, Dylan Cotter,” Parzero said just to name a few.

At post time, The Newton Braves have played 5 teams in the past month and have kept the games in their favor the whole time, never letting a team get close to them.

Starting out their season at Warren Hills on September 2, the Braves finished the game with a 22 point lead, making the final score 42-20.

After their first win, they took on the first home game of the season against Sussex Tech on September 9, blowing them away with a score of 48-14. Leaving the Braves a record of 2-0.

They continued their dominating strike against Wallkill Valley at Wallkill on September 17, the Braves kept the Rangers from taking control of the game with a final score of 35-7.

Newton took on their rivals Kittatinny for Newton's homecoming game on September 23, battling for their rival trophy. Newton shut the Cougars offense completely, not letting them score, making the final score 52-0.

The Braves took on Lenape Valley on September 30, letting everyone know they mean business and stopped the Patriots from gaining any momentum in the game leaving the score 42-6 giving the Newton Braves a overall 5-0 win score.

Coach Parzero attributed their success so far this season to the players. “The commitment is at an all time high, the boys had an amazing summer at training camps and are here 5 days a week even on non-mandatory days.” He went on to say, “We haven't changed much from the past, but the kids expect to win and trust the process of working hard.”

So far, the Braves have been unstoppable facing teams that they rolled right over. At post time, the Braves took on another undefeated team that might give them some trouble--Hackettstown.

Hackettstown Tigers have been an unbeatable team with their new offense strategy, players, and coach. Parzero said this might be the most difficult team they’ve faced so far this season.

“We have faced other teams who use a similar offense; however, Hackettstown has some better players and have had more success with it. Our approach really won’t change, so we just have to trust in our team and the calls the boys make and how they work as a team out on the field.”

Coach Parzero is confident in his team and the support around them as he added, “It's been outstanding; the support is amazing here from the community and the players and the students. Everyone is rooting for us so we feel like we don’t want to let them down so we work hard to win.”
