About me:
My name is Greta Phillips and I am the ELL teacher at Underwood. I grew up in Massachuetts and have lived here my whole life - except for one college semester in Spain and almost two years in Costa Rica.
Since I was in Kindergarten, I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. When I started Spanish classes in high school, I dreamed of being a Spanish teacher. After I studied abroad in Spain, my college mentor suggested that I might be interested in teaching English instead. At that moment, I knew I had my goal - I would teach others the English language skills they needed for accomplishing their own dreams.
I started by teaching English in Costa Rica. I worked at a language school called Instituto Estelar Bilingue and taught classes for children and adults. I loved teaching English, improving my Spanish, and immersing myself in Costa Rican culture.
When I came back to the Boston area, I taught English to adults at Watertown's Project Literacy while I got my Master's in Teaching English as a Second Language. As I finished my degree, I began teaching ELL here at Underwood in 2013!
I have always loved and admired my own teachers, and I am honored to be able to give back by teaching at Underwood.
When I'm not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, hiking, and reading.
I love looking for new books for my students on the website called I'm Your Neighbor Books. It helps me find books about characters from all over the world. Some of my favorite books have come from here!
For Poem in your Pocket Day last year, I found this great poem about being a bilingual kid. I love it and I hope you do, too! -->
