Bringing books to life for every child.
We want to foster a love for books and reading through interactive, engaging sessions with kids. We have run drives throughout Newton to bring books to all parts of the community, and are in the process of partnering with several organizations to set up Shared Shelf Story Times and other activities.
HOW WE STARTED
The Shared Shelf began in late 2024 as a project formed by a group of students at Newton South High School. Initially, the project was supposed to be temporary: a group leading a small book drive across some Newton schools to benefit local organizations and shelters.
HOW IT'S GOING
The Shared Shelf's reach was much bigger than originally expected -- tens turned into hundreds of books collected from its first drive. Benefiting the Newton Food Pantry's Book Nook, the Pine Street Inn, and other locations, The Shared Shelf's drives have made a huge difference. In furthering this impact, The Shared Shelf has turned into a more permanent group of high school students who lead read-alouds, craft sessions, and continue to provide books to all children in our communities.
