Model UN is an activity in which students vote, speak, and write on behalf of a country in order to come up with a solution to a pressing global issue. Members learn about negotiation, diplomacy, current events, global politics, and more. At our conference, NNHSMUN, we will have three exciting committees: two high school committees (ISIS, and the Belt and Road Initiative) and one middle school committee (the Syrian Refugee Crisis).
We aspire to help participants become more informed about current events and global politics, gain confidence in public speaking, begin to improve their writing, learn how to effectively research a topic, and build their teamwork skills. In addition, we hope that you'll make friends and have fun!
We hope that at the very least, you'll read the study guide, do some research on your country, and gain a basic understanding of the topic so that you can be fully engaged in the debate. You also have the option to write a position paper, which is a page long and double-spaced, due on the day of the conference. In theory, without the position paper, studying could take less than an hour, but we encourage you to spend more time learning about your country and the topic.
Background knowledge outside of the study guide is great, of course, but you won't need it to participate effectively. We will provide you with everything you'll need, including study guides.
Yes, of course there are; you can make friends and eat lunch at one of the many restaurants in Newtonville, all while discussing a pressing global issue! Besides, if everyone finishes voting for resolutions, we probably will do superlatives ("Best . . .", "Most likely to . . .") or something else.
