*Though the above schedule is in half hour sections, some activities do not end on the half hour. Therefore, use the above schedule as a general guide for what's happening throughout the school day, but not an exact schedule for the minute-to-minute happenings of the school day.
Choice Boxes: A time focused on communication and play skills. During choice boxes, children have an individual bin of toys, both preferred and "challenge" toys.
Tuesday Gym (led by Angela): Half of the class goes to the gym for 25 minutes, while the other half eats lunch (the groups will switch after 25 minutes). In the gym, stations are set up such as an obstacle course, a throwing activity, scooters etc. These stations are meant to help develop gross motor skills such as balance, jumping, hopping, skipping, throwing, and more.
Morning Meeting: During morning meeting, the whole group comes together. Everyday morning meeting starts with the same two activities: sing hello, and say hello to each other. There is a third morning meeting activity that changes based on the day or the teacher who is leading meeting that day. Some examples of the third activity are: reading the book of the week, answering the question of the day, reporting the weather, sharing news or group games.
Bathroom: When snack/lunch is finished and cleaned up, children are expected to go to engage in the activities the teachers have chosen while small groups of students are taken to the bathroom.
Playground/Tent: Our playground gives opportunity for all students to engage in gross motor activities and free play. While students are closely supervised, the playground is a time for children to be independent on a variety of structures, and with a variety of materials.
This year, we have tent time twice a week. During tent time the children are able to run around, play chase, play with balls and big bubble wands.
Centers: The class is engaged in kid's choice, but there are a three “must do” centers, such as an art activity, a sensory activity, and a fine motor activity. The art activity will changes every day and may be based on a math, science, or ELA curriculum framework, or it may be a more sensory experience.
Friendship circle: This group time is led by our social worker, Sheila Morris, or our school psychologist, Becca Parrish. They teach the students about a wide array of social issues such as sharing, being respectful, and who to talk to if you need help.
Guitar Time: During guitar time, children are encouraged to engage in movement songs, participate in fingerplay, and learn through multi-sensory experiences.
Goodbye: This is our last group time of the day, where the kids come together to sing one last song and say goodbye to their friends.
