Each week, we learn a new poem or song that focuses on a particular letter/sound, sight word or concept such as rhyming, alliteration, etc. I post the new poem so that you will read it and/or sing it with your child to continue the fun and learning at home. These poems and songs quickly become favorites as we read them each day. Each poem will be added to your child's class poem book so that he/she can read it independently. Please scroll down to see the current week's poem. Enjoy!
Welcome!
Welcome! Welcome!
Greet our day.
Time for work and time for play.
School is where we love to be.
Friends together, you and me!

The Apple
Up in the apple tree
High off the ground,
I see an apple
So big and round.
I climb up the tree
And hold on tight,
I pick that apple
And take a big bite!
Fall
(to the tune of “Are You Sleeping?”)
Leaves are falling,
Leaves are falling,
to the ground
without a sound.
Days are getting shorter,
Nights are growing longer.
Fall is here.
Fall is here.
Autumn Winds
Autumn winds begin to blow
Colored leaves fall fast and slow.
Whirling, twirling all around,
Until at last they touch the ground.
It is Autumn
All the leaves are falling down
Falling down, falling down.
Twirling, swirling to the ground,
It is autumn!
As they fall they twirl around,
Twirl around, twirl around.
Twirling, swirling to the ground,
It is autumn!
Lots of colors touch the ground,
Touch the ground, touch the ground.
Red and yellow, orange and brown,
It is autumn!
A Fall of Colors
I like sunshine.
I like trees.
I like dancing in the breeze.
I turn orange.
I turn brown.
I go sailing to the ground.
I am crispy.
I can crunch.
I get raked up in a bunch.
The Pumpkin Song
(to the tune of “Have You Ever Seen a Lassie?”)
Have you ever seen a pumpkin,
a pumpkin, a pumpkin?
Have you ever seen a pumpkin
that looks just like this?
A big one, a small one.
A short one, a tall one.
Have you ever seen a pumpkin
that looks just like this?
Leaves
Leaves on the pumpkin,
Leaves on the tree,
Leaves on the house,
Leaves on me.
Leaves on the ground,
Leaves on the street,
Leaves on the car,
Leaves on my feet.
Leaves on the wagon,
Leaves on the chair,
Leaves on the dog,
Leaves everywhere!
5 Little Leaves
Five little leaves on the tree next door,
One fell off and then there were four,
Four little leaves all over the tree,
A bird pulled off one and then there were three,
Three little leaves where the wind blew
One fell off and then there were two,
Two little leaves sitting in the sun
A bug ate a leaf and now there is one,
One little leaf in the tree all alone
The wind blew and blew and now there are none.
Albuquerque Turkey
Albuquerque is a turkey,
And he's feathered and he's fine.
And he wobbles, and he gobbles,
And he's absolutely mine.
He's the best pet that you can get,
Better than a dog or cat.
He's my Albuquerque turkey,
And I'm awfully glad of that.
Albuquerque is a turkey,
And he's happy in his bed,
Cause for our Thanksgiving dinner,
We had pizza pie instead.
Growing
A little bulb for me to sow...
A little earth to make it grow...
A little hole...
A little pat...
A little wish...
And that is that!
A little sun...
A little shower...
A little while...
And then a flower!
My Bulb
This is my bulb
I'll take good care
And then some dirt
I'll put in there.
The sun will shine
And the water will fall
And my bulb will blossom
And grow straight and tall.
The Bulb Song
(to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")
I'm a paperwhite bulb,
grow me in a pot.
Give me lots of water,
and a sunny spot.
My stem grows up like this,
my roots grow down.
Soon I'll be the prettiest
flower in town!
Winter Cheer
I love all the seasons,
But winter is the best!
Let's put on our mittens,
Now we are all dressed.
In the snow, we love to play
And this is what we hear:
Brrr, brrr, brrr, brrr!
That's this season's cheer!
A Chubby Little Snowman
A chubby little snowman
Had a carrot nose
Along came a rabbit
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny,
Looking for his lunch,
Ate the snowman's
carrot nose…
Nibble, nibble, CRUNCH!
I'm a Little Snowman
I'm a little snowman
Short and fat
Here is my scarf
And here is my hat.
When it's cold and snowy,
I will stay.
But when it gets warm
I melt away!
Winter Animals
Winter is cold.
There is snow in the sky.
The squirrel gathers nuts
And the wild geese fly.
The fluffy red fox
Has his fur to keep warm.
The bear is in her cave,
Sleeping all through the storm.
I'm a Little Groundhog
I'm a little groundhog
Furry and brown
When winter comes
I sleep underground.
I'm curled up
As cozy as can be.
When it's spring,
Please wake me!
Open a Book
Open a book
And you will find,
People and places of every kind;
Open a book
And you can be,
Anything you want to be;
Open a book
And you can share,
Wondrous words you find in there
Open a book
And I will too,
You read to me,
And I'll read to you!
I Can Read
I can read on a boat.
I can read with a goat.
I can read on a train.
I can read in the rain.
I can read with a fox.
I can read in a box.
I can read with a mouse.
I can read in a house.
I can read here or there
or anywhere!
Winds of March
Winds of March,
we welcome you.
There is work for you to do.
Work and play and blow all day.
Blow the winter cold away.
Rain
Rain on the rooftops,
Rain on the trees.
Rain on the green grass,
But not on me!
A Kite
I often sit and wish that I
Could be a kite up in the sky,
And ride upon the breeze and go
Whichever way I chanced to blow.
What The Robin Told
The wind told the grasses,
And the grasses told the trees.
The trees told the bushes,
And the bushes told the bees.
The bees told the robin,
And the robin sang out clear:
Wake Up! Wake up!
Spring is here!
Goodbye
Goodbye snow.
Goodbye sled.
Goodbye winter.
Spring is ahead!
Hello sun.
Hello swing.
Goodbye winter,
Hello spring!
April Showers
Pitter patter rain drops
Falling from the sky
Here is my umbrella
Hold it way up high!
When the rain is over
And the sun begins to glow
Little flowers start to bud
Then grow, grow, grow!
My Garden
This is my garden,
I'll plant it with care.
Here are the seeds
I'll plant in there.
The sun will shine.
The rain will fall.
The seeds will sprout
and grow up tall.
Springtime
(to the tune of "Are You Sleeping?")
I see rain clouds.
I see birds’ nests,
Butterflies too!
Flowers too!
Everything is growing.
The wind is gently blowing.
Spring is here!
Spring is here!
Little Ladybug
I’m a little ladybug
Pretty as can be.
I am an insect
You can see.
I am brightly colored
With spots of black.
You can see them on my back!
Five Little Ladybugs
Five little ladybugs climbing on a door.
One flew away, and then there were four.
Four little ladybugs sitting on a tree.
One flew away, and then there were three.
Three little ladybugs landed on a shoe.
One flew away, and then there were two.
Two little ladybugs looking for some fun.
One flew away, and then there was one.
One little ladybug sitting in the sun.
She flew away, and then there were none!
I’m a Little Rocket
I’m a little rocket
Pointing at the moon.
Now I’m getting fueled up
We’ll be ready soon.
When it’s time to board me
Then I’ll say:
Blast off! Zoom! We’re on our way!
