Since a yearbook is something that most seniors buy, as well as a lot of students from other grades, advertisement isn't one of our priorities. But we do have a few ways in which we earn more money from things other than the physical book. I would say that the one advertisement we do for the book is the occasional instagram story and email from our advisor to all students and parents about buying the book.
Typically, publications ask for sponsors or sell ads to local businesses. But our yearbook sells ads to the parents of the senior class. At the end of our book, we have eight spreads worth of space for ads. This ad is an opportunity for parents to give a shout out to their child, congratulating them for their high school years and their graduation.
We sell three types of ads.
1/4 of a page ad, which is $100.
1/2 of a page ad, which is $200.
1 full page of an ad, which is $350.
Most parents choose the first option, as it is the cheapest and is typically enough space to contain both photos and text.
Just with 12 ads, we have already made $1650.
When ordering a yearbook, parents/students have the option to add features to their cover for an additional cost. As a yearbook, we don't actively advertise for these features, but __.
This is the most popular option. Buyers can choose the text that they want and up to five icons to go under their chosen text. There are icons for each sport as well as things like theater, which are popular amongst students who were involved in those extracurricular activities.
1st line of text is sold for $9
2nd line of text is sold for $9
Each icon is sold for $5
iTags are less popular, but we still get a few sales each year. The concept is the same as name stamps, it is just that the text and icons are on a metal nameplate.
1st line of text is sold for $9
2nd line of text is sold for $9
Each icon is sold for $5
Our yearbook's starting price is $70 during the early bird sale. From then on, the price rises to $80, then to $90, and finally to $100. Since the early bird sale only goes on for two days, we try to spread the word by posting it on our Instagram, + our advisor sent out an email to parents and students about it. Just within these two days of early bird sale, we sold 240 books, which comes up to about $16800.
We try to give reminders to all students a couple of days before the price goes up, and every time we do, we get at least 40 new sales. When we announced that the price was going up to $90, we got 301 new orders, making $24080.
