In these courses, the participants will be mentored by a faculty member or artist-in-residence in topics ranging from programming to performance practice to creative methodology. Students will be expected to participate in the course in a number of ways including contributing to class discussions, performance(s), and collaborative projects. Students will also be required to document and reflect on their work, and the work of others in the class. This course is open to all graduate students at the College of Performing Arts, including students in the Master of Arts: Arts Management and Entrepreneurship, Master of Music: Performer / Composer, Master of Fine Arts: Contemporary Theatre and Performance, and Master of Music programs, and is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. This course fulfills the MAAME Artistic Practice requirement and can count towards the MMPC Stone Lab requirement.
Due to limited space, students will only be able to participate in one Cross-College Grad Making Lab per semester. Should space remain available, students may be permitted to register for a second lab by permission at a later date. Please consult your advisor if you need assistance with self-registration.
Founders: Songwriting & Arranging (1 credit)
Unlock your creative potential in this hands-on workshop designed for aspiring songwriters and arrangers. Over the course of this program, students will explore the fundamentals of songwriting, including lyrics, melody creation, and chord progressions. Participants will engage in collaborative exercises to develop their unique voice and style.
In addition to songwriting, the workshop will delve into advanced arranging concepts including unique instrumentation, creative compositional techniques, various harmonic and rhythmic deviations, and much more.
This course fulfills the MAAME Artistic Practice requirement and can count towards the MMPC Stone Lab requirement.

Sandbox Percussion (1 credit)
Described as “exhilarating” (The New York Times) and “utterly mesmerizing” (The Guardian), GRAMMY®-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion brings out the best in composers through their unwavering dedication to artistry in contemporary chamber music. In this course the participants will be mentored by members of Sandbox Percussion in topics ranging from programming to performance practice to creative methodology. Students will be expected to participate in the course in a number of ways including contributing to class discussions, performance(s), and collaborative projects.

Afghanistan's Endangered Music (1 credit)
In this Cross Grad-Making Lab, which will be mentored by vocalist Dr. Waheedullah Saghar, a master of Afghan and Hindustani music who has performed all over the world and is the former head of the Music Department at Kabul University, students will discover the wealth of Afghan classical music, which is currently an endangered art form. They will learn about Afghan/Hindustani ragas (modes) and taals (rhythmic cycles) in theoretical and practical ways, highlighting their similarities with Western music scales and modes as well as their implications for jazz improvisation. Dr. Saghar will be in residence at The New School during the 2024-25 academic year as part of the New School's University in Exile for Afghan Artists, a consortium in collaboration with the Artistic Freedom Initiative.

Founders: Improve Your Improv (1 credit)
Join us for an exciting workshop that explores the vibrant and creative world of musical improvisation. Whether you're a seasoned improviser or just starting your improvising journey, this interactive session will help you tap into your creative instincts and express yourself through music.
Led by Founders, participants in the workshop will learn the fundamentals of improvisation, including techniques for spontaneous melody creation, rhythm exploration, and harmonization. Through guided exercises, group activities, and collaborative jam sessions, you'll discover how to break free from the confines of structured music and find your unique voice.
Expect to build confidence, enhance your listening skills, and connect with your inner creative self, in a fun, supportive environment. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your instrument (or your voice) and an open mind!
