New Urban Paradigms: Healthier Futures
Group project led by Javier Contreras, Alex Tang and Antoine Vedel
Architectural Design, Design Studio 6, Spring 2020
Instructors: Cristina Handal, Alison Mears and Emily Moss
This project aims to humanize the currently industrial Pier 35 by extending the flow of the city via a more humanistic interpretation. By implementation of sustainably sourced materials and design elements that take the UNSDGs into consideration, the new Pier 35 aspires to manifest a community that prospers in areas such as good health and wellbeing, industry, innovation and infrastructure as well as life below water.
This architectural intervention allows for a conscious separation between the main programs which include but are not limited to, housing, a wellness center, grocery and library/knowledge center — however by introducing a series of platforms, the aforementioned programs are tied together in a web-like fashion.
The overall system’s main focus is to encourage a strong sense of community and in turn, guarantee resiliency.
