Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities" is an excellent read for those interested in world-building. Each city in the book is like a mini thought experiment – what if a city was built entirely on stilts, or constantly rebuilt itself? The book demonstrates how to use sensory details to make your worlds feel real, and how to structure your stories in innovative ways. It shows how to take familiar concepts and push them to extreme conclusions – a key skill for envisioning future or alien worlds.

Even a decade later, when this image was taken, the radiation probably caused the film to develop strangely, creating the photo’s grainy quality. The man in this photo, Artur Korneyev, has likely visited this area more than anyone else, and in doing so has been exposed to more radiation than almost anyone in history.
