The Material Exchange started as an idea back in August 2023, after student Juliet Valente Royster (Class of 2024) did an exchange at the Design Academy of Eindhoven. She was inspired by their Material Bank, an active student led initiative. It was part of the student culture to reuse old materials from previous students' projects and always a consideration when developing new projects. When realizing how much was wasted in the dumpsters back at Parsons after every semester, Juliet saw this dilemma as an opportunity. She began to take initiative to get a similar program started. It took a lot of communications and efforts to get administration on board, but with her persistence it became fully open to students in December of 2023. Being student led, the Material Exchange always encourages student involvement and sharing ideas so it can expand their engagement with students. It is their mission to illuminate the potential to expand circular systems in making through institutions and industries. It all starts by sharing seeds of knowledge to grow ideas for tomorrow.
