ABSENCES
Regular, weekly attendance at all Mannes Prep classes is very important. However, we do recognize that on rare occasions students might need to miss class. Students/families should notify the Prep office and all teachers of any planned absences at least two weeks in advance using the absence reporting form available here and also under the information for parent's tab on the Mannes Prep website. In case of illness, please notify us as soon as possible. Be sure to contact your private lessons teacher and chamber music coach separately via their preferred method of contact as well.
Large Ensemble Attendance
Attendance and participation in weekly rehearsals is required. Please sign in on the roster before every rehearsal. Failure to sign in may result in your being marked absent. If you must miss a rehearsal, you MUST email Mannes Prep (mannesprep@newschool.edu) at least 2 weeks in advance to request permission to do so. Please note: if you have more than 2 absences within any rehearsal period leading up to a concert, you may not be allowed to play the concert.
Students who miss more than three (3) large ensemble rehearsals may not be allowed to participate in workshops and recitals.
CLASS TIME
The New School uses Carnegie teaching hours. Classes and Lessons begin on :05 and end on :55 after the hour in order to facilitate student movement between classes.
A one-hour class lasts for 50 minutes.
A ¾-hour class lasts for 37.5 minutes.
A ½ hour class lasts for 25 minutes.
MAKE-UP POLICY
There are no refunds for student absences.
If a teacher is absent from a private lesson or class, the lesson or class will be made up. In person students can expect an in-person makeup lesson unless the family and teacher have jointly decided upon a Remote/Zoom lesson.
Teachers are not required to make up lessons or classes missed by students. However, at the discretion of the instructor, a private lesson may be made up, provided that notice of the absence has been given at least one day before the scheduled lesson.
If a student cancels a make-up lesson, it will not be re-scheduled; the lesson is considered to be made up.
TEACHER CHOICE
Upon entrance into the program, students are encouraged to choose their 1:1 lessons instructor. Please review these tips for selecting a teacher at Mannes Prep. Students who choose "No preference" will be matched with an instructor based on the Mannes Prep rolling seniority process outlined in the Local 7902 Collective Bargaining Agreement. NEWSLETTER
Be sure to stay up-to-date on important Prep information by reading our weekly Prep Newsletter! The newsletter is our primary method of communication. It is sent out via email each week that the Prep Division is in session, usually on Thursday or Friday. It includes important information about the current week’s classes, upcoming events, special offers for the Prep community, and more. If you have good news, upcoming performances, or other information to share in the newsletter, please send all details to mannesprep@newschool.edu.
SATURDAY BULLETIN BOARD
On Saturdays when the Prep Division is in session, be sure to check the bulletin board in the lobby. All recital programs, orchestra assignments and rehearsal information, upcoming events, and much more is posted each week. A quick visit at the bulletin board will answer many of your questions!
CONTACT INFORMATION
Make sure to stay in touch! Please notify the Prep Office of any change in contact information, including home address, phone numbers, and email address.
SCHOOL CLOSING
In the event of severe weather or other emergency, Mannes and the Prep Division may close. Announcements of closings will be left on the main line of Mannes: (212) 580-0210. Please note that the Prep Division rarely closes.
PROGRAMS
For a complete list of all Prep Division programs, classes, tuition, and fees, please see the Tuition & Fees sheet, available in the Prep Office and on the Prep Division’s website.
TAKE AN ELECTIVE COURSE
Too much space in your schedule? We can help you fill it! Mannes Prep offers elective courses each semester and families will be notified via the newsletter what the offerings will be for each semester. Electives incur an additional fee.
Register for Chamber Music
Chamber music is an exciting, rewarding, and fun elective for our students! To participate, students register for chamber music before the fall semester begins, and audition for placement near the beginning of the school year. Although we try to create groups for every interested student, we can’t guarantee that each student will be able to join a group; if we’re not able to place a student into a group, the chamber music fee would be refunded.
All groups are strongly encouraged to perform on the Chamber Music Bash each fall and spring. The Chamber Music Bash is free and open to the public; family and friends are welcome to attend!
Take Secondary Lessons
Contact the Prep office if you would like to sign up for secondary lessons. Secondary lessons are available on most instruments, and lessons are offered for either ½ hour, ¾ hour, or for a full hour.
Teacher Changes
Teacher changes are rare, and typically our students stay with the same private teacher from year to year. However, if a family wishes to change private instructors, they should start by contacting the Prep Office to discuss possibilities. Most changes are made over the summer—information about teacher change requests is listed in the re-registration form sent out each spring. For any concerns or questions about teacher requests and matches, please contact Mannes Prep at mannesprep@newschool.edu.
TUITION
For a complete list of all Prep Division programs, classes, tuition, and fees, please see the 2024-2025 Tuition and Fees Sheet, available in the Prep Office and on the Prep Division’s website here . What is the Clara Mannes Scholars Program?
The Clara Mannes Scholars Program encourages Mannes Prep students who wish to work towards a higher standard and recognizes the extra time and effort they have put in over the course of an academic year with a special certificate, additional performance opportunities, and community engagement initiatives the following year. The additional performance opportunities reinforce an exemplary dedication to practice and study and are designed to underscore and deepen a student’s love of music. Each year students will demonstrate their renewed commitment and passion for the material through the successful completion of a graded showcase.
Who can apply?
Any and all students are welcome to request a graded showcase at the end of an academic year in order to be considered for the Clara Mannes Scholars Program; There is no limit to the number of students who may be accepted. New and continuing students will follow the same process. Students must receive an A- or above average to qualify for admission to the CMSP program.
Application Process:
The student’s private instructor must register them for a graded showcase here. Deadline: February 1, 2025
Students are assigned a time and date for a May 2025 Graded Showcase by the office.

Junior Program: major scales up to three sharps and three flats
Pre-Senior Program: all major scales
Senior Program: all major scales, as well as two minor scales of your choice
Repertoire:
Instrumentalists and Vocalists should choose and prepare two contrasting pieces, one of which should represent one of the musical styles that have evolved during the past hundred years. Students are encouraged to present a work by a living composer or one written in the last 50 years.
Memorization of one piece is required.
The total duration of both pieces should not exceed 8 minutes. Cuts or movements of larger works are acceptable.
Accompaniment is not required.
You will receive an email with Pre-registration instructions in April (let us know if you do not receive these instructions). The Performing Arts Library is located on the 2nd floor of Mannes and is an incredible resource for our community. On Saturdays when the Prep Division is in session, the Library is open from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (The circulation desk closes at 4:30 p.m.)
Even when the Library is closed, Mannes Prep students have access to over 800,000 streaming tracks of jazz and classical music! In addition, you have access to music encyclopedias, digital scores you can print, and even streaming video of opera! All this can be accessed through my.newschool.edu, where you can also check the status of your library account and item due dates. To see the status of your library account, click on "View Your Patron Record" in the Library tab. Once you are logged onto MyNewSchool, you can do so much more from the library tab than check your account. Students have access to nearly 30 music databases as well as hundreds of other non-music databases!
Questions? Click on "Ask a Librarian" or call (212) 580-0210, ext. 4803. Happy browsing!
Practice or get some work done in the Performing Arts Library!
Mannes practice rooms are located on the mezzanine, 3rd, 4th, and 7th floors of the building. If you are able to find an available room (the building is often at capacity), feel free to use your free time to warm up for your lesson or practice for an upcoming performance or audition. On Saturdays, the Library is open from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (the circulation desk closes at 4:30 p.m.).
Workshops
Parents and teachers are not allowed in workshops. Workshops are an opportunity for students to hone their performance skills in a supportive, closed, and small group setting.
When participating in Prep workshops, students are required to attend the workshop for the entire duration. If a student is unable to stay for the entire workshop hour, please choose an alternate date. As a courtesy to every student performing in the workshop, it’s important to have as few disruptions as possible. Additionally, when students leave early, they miss out on the opportunity to hear their fellow students perform in a closed session and receive fresh insight from a different faculty perspective.
Students must successfully complete a workshop in order to perform on a recital.
If an accompanist is required, it is the responsibility of the teacher to arrange for the accompanist.
The teacher should complete the workshop form online at least one week in advance.
The workshop and recital schedule for each semester is on the Prep sign-up webpage, the bulletin board in the lobby, and available to pick up in the Prep office.
Students may perform on a maximum of 4 workshops per semester for each instrument they study at Mannes Prep.
Recitals
Recitals are an opportunity for students to perform for family, friends, and Prep audiences in a warm and friendly environment.
Students may play on a recital only after a successful workshop performance.
Because not all students participate in workshops with the goal of performing in a recital and students have various scheduling requirements, students are not automatically placed in recitals after workshops.
The teacher should complete the recital sign-up form online at least one week in advance.
Provide the following information:
Student Name, Age, & Instrument
Teacher Name
Composer / Title
Accurate Duration
Accompanist (arrangements are the responsibility of the teacher)
A student or parent may sign-up for a recital only with the expressed permission of the private teacher.
If a student is to play a workshop only one week before the desired recital date, the teacher may sign-up the student for the recital even though the outcome of the workshop is still unknown. If the student is deemed unready the Prep office will contact the private teacher.
Students may perform on a maximum of 3 recitals per semester on each instrument they study at Mannes Prep.
Parents, family members, teachers, and friends are all welcome and encouraged to attend student recitals! However, we ask that out of respect for all of our talented young performers, everyone plan on attending the full recital. Should you arrive to a performance late, please only enter during the applause between pieces.
Rehearsals and Performances with Accompanists
It is the responsibility of the private teacher to arrange for an accompanist and rehearsal time.
Yura Jang and Chung A Hong are the official accompanists for Prep and are available on Saturdays.
Rehearse with a student one ½-hour prior to a Workshop
Play for the student in the Workshop
Rehearse with the student one ½-hour prior to a Recital
Play for the student in the Recital
Accompanist slots become available online at one week in advance.
To sign up for Yura Jang:
To sign up for Chung A Hong:
Their schedule fills up quickly, so sign up as early as possible.
Rehearsals should be scheduled during the student’s lesson time. If this is not possible the teacher can sign up for another available time. However, a rehearsal cannot conflict with anything else in the student’s Prep schedule. The teacher needs to know her/his student’s Saturday schedule in order to avoid a conflict.
If the student’s lesson room does not have a piano or if the rehearsal has to be scheduled outside of a student’s lesson time please leave the room # line blank and the office will assign a room. On the day of the rehearsal, i.e., the following Saturday, the student should check the accompanist schedule posted outside the Prep office.
Please contact the Prep office at mannesprep@newschool.edu if you have any questions. We’re looking forward to a wonderful year of beautiful performances!
