Phones and Social Media, Should Teens Have It?
By Waverly Swan
Intro
Should teens have social media? This is a common debate that has been happening since these platforms came out. It definitely varies whether or not one believes that they should. Some argue that it gives teens a chance to connect, but others say they can connect enough through text. Lots of people say there are other variables like screen time to be factored in. In the end, social media has helped people to connect but it also has caused lots of mental health problems.
Supporters
The people who are in support of teens having social media say that they can talk to their parents about the things they see on it and have the proper boundaries so they can use it properly as adults. They also say that social media can give people more ways to share what's going on than text and Messages doesn’t do as good of a job as, say, TikTok or Instagram.
Against
Although the supporters have a good argument, the people against it show the fact that according to recent surveys, ninety percent of teens have social media, and other studies have shown that teens and young adults on social media are up to sixty six percent more likely to develop depression. They also say that teens spend an average of four point eight hours on their phones, with some teens spending as much as sixteen hours on their phones.
Summary
In summary, each side has about an equal argument and people will most likely argue over it for as long as there is social media. Scientists will continue to study the successes and failures that social media contributes to. Social media has positive and negative effects and it depends on how you use it and whether or not it makes you happy.
