Questions to consider
Is anyone illegal on stolen land?
Can a human being be "illegal"?
What is you opinion of the conditions at ICE Detention Centers?
New York specifically has been a melting pot since the 1880s when millions of migrants came to Ellis Islands with hopes of a better life. Immigration has always been a part of New York's history and we have always welcomed those looking for freedom and opportunity.
In light of the 9/11 attacks, in 2003, the US Department of Homeland Security went through a massive reorganizing where the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was created.
The purpose was to protect America from the cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten national security and public safety.
In America today, Homeland Security has been cracking down specifically on border control and illegal immigration from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. Detention camps are very overcrowded and in poor conditions (especially a humanitarian issue given Covid-19), and there has been much debate on how to reform and improve immigration policies.
