Chapter 63: The Journey
So much happens in this chapter it could be a book to itself. Brightbill had quite an adventure on the migration to the wintering grounds. We know robots don't have feelings, but when reading this chapter I couldn't help but wonder what Roz would be feeling as she heard Brightbill tell his story. Especially the part about the robot factory. What do you think?

The Wild Robot
Chapter 60: The Fish
The Wild Robot
Chapter 59: The Spring
How did the ugliness of the dead animals in the winter bring beauty in the spring?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 58: The Conversations
We've already learned a lot about how the animals of the island survive, physically. In this chapter we learn a bit about how they survive emotionally when life on the island is feeling hard and getting them down. The main emotional survival strategy we see them use here is to talk to each other. Sharing your feelings and experiences by talking and listening to others can often help you feel better.
Why do you think Digdown said if he could live his life over, the one thing he would want to do differently would be to spend more time helping others?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 57: The Fire
How did the second lodge catch fire?
Who did Roz save from the burning second lodge?
What were the most important safety features of the rebuilt second lodge?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 56: The New Lodges
Why did Roz build the second lodge?
What did Roz warn the animals about fire?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 55: The Lodgers
These last two chapters gave me a lot to think about.
An important and interesting idea to think about that the author shows us in this chapter is that things can be both beautiful and ugly (winter) or give you fear and hope (fire) at the same time.
Has there ever been a time you've had two feelings or thoughts at the same time?
How did the experiences Roz had in these chapters make you feel?
Why do you think Roz chose to call out "Animals of the island! You do not have to freeze! Join me in my lodge where it is safe and warm!" ?
Has there ever been a time you've see someone help other's the way Roz helps the animals?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 54: The Winter
The Wild Robot
Chapter 53: The Migration
Wow! A lot has happened in the past few chapters. Lets practice retelling. Can you answer all of these questions when retelling the past two chapters?
How long did it take for the geese to fly south?
How long would the geese spend in their warm wintering grounds?
Who lead the migration of geese south for the winter?
Why did Brightbill fly next to Longneck, behind his left wing?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 52: The Flock
The Wild Robot
Chapter 51: The Autumn
Autumn is a beautiful season to enjoy all the colorful changes, but it is also an important time to prepare for winter. Especially if you're and animal in the wild. We learn about several different ways animals prepare for winter in this chapter. Can you think of any others that the author left out?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 50: The Button
This chapter was very suspenseful! I really felt for Brightbill when he didn't know what would happen after pressing the button.
Has there ever been a time when you felt you had to make an important decision and didn't know how it would turn out? If so, how did that make you feel and how did you handle it?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 49: The Flier
Brightbill has come a long way and grown very quickly in our story. We start to see that he isn't a baby gosling anymore in this chapter. He has become a very skillful flier.
I had a strong connection to Brightbill when reading this chapter. He was reminding me of how far Wade has come this year. Just a few months ago he could only barely crawl and now he's running around the yard and climbing all over the place. It's amazing how much you can learn and grow in a year!
Think back to one year ago when you were in kindergarten. Can you think of something that you were just learning then that may have been challenging for you but is much easier now? I bet you can!
The Wild Robot
Chapter 48: The New Foot
This chapter really had me thinking about all of the character traits we learned about earlier in the year. One that especially stood out to me was perseverance. It's not easy work for Roz's new friends to help her get a new foot that will last, but they don't stop trying.
What other character traits do you notice in this chapter?
Can you think of a time that you've showed perseverance?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 47: The Parade
Roz lost her foot! It doesn't hurt but it is a problem! Who do you predict she will go to for help making a new foot. Think about the supporting characters we have met so far. Will it be Chitchat, the squirrel? Will it be Loudwing, the wise goose? Who else have we met? Which animal is famous for their building skills?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 46: The Fight
This chapter is a perfect opportunity to make a movie in your mind! Peter Brown gives us vivid action words, dramatic sounds, and great descriptors to help us visualize this battle.
Can you create a drawing that illustrates some of this action?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 45: The Dead Robots
I am struggling with the title of this chapter. Can something be dead that wasn't ever alive? Would you rename this chapter? What new title could we give it?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 44: The Runaway
Roz feels something like worry when Brightbill takes off. Predators are one of her worries. What is a predator? What animal would be a predator for Brightbill?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 43: The Gosling Takes Off
Roz and Brightbill have had some difficult conversations. Brightbill is full of confusion, anger and love about his mother being a robot.
In this chapter, Brightbill gets so angry that he flies away!
What do you do when you feel angry?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 42: The Strange Family
The Wild Robot
Chapter 41: The Summer
The Wild Robot
Chapter 40: The Ship
Peter Brown is about to turn this story upside down but before he does, he gives us a sweet snapshot of what life is like for our main characters in chapters 40 and 41. Do you have any predictions about how the story will change? Who do you think is on the ship? Why do you think it came so close to the island?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 39: The First Flight
Clearly Brightbill is designed to fly...but he still needs to practice. Today's chapter might inspire us to think about the skills we are naturally interested in working on and how we practice to develop them. Is it singing, playing an instrument, swinging, hitting a baseball, or writing poetry?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 38: The New Friendship
On Seesaw, some of you have been reading or participating in activities that explore nonfiction text, also known as true fact books. Some examples of nonfiction texts are How To Books (procedural writing), Nature Guides, All About Books, and Biographies.
The Wild Robot is technically a fiction book. Peter Brown's big imagination dreamed up Roz, the island and all of her animal friends...and foes. But you will find that his book also contains many FACTS, mostly about animals and their habitats, embedded or carefully placed inside it. Peter Brown had to do research to write his book!
Chapter 38 is a great example of the merge between fiction and nonfiction. Listen carefully to what ChitChat shares about her life. What are 3 facts we learn about squirrels?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 37: The Squirrel
Brightbill finds his first very special friendship in this chapter.
Talk to a grown-up in your home about a special friendship they had when they were little. Maybe they have a sweet or funny mischief story to share with you about that friendship.
The Wild Robot
Chapter 36: The Gosling Grows
Brightbill is growing up. You might relate to Brightbill a bit more in this chapter, First Graders. How are you like Brightbill? How are you different?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 35: The First Swim
This chapter starts off pretty TRANQUIL but ends with a bit of suspense and drama.
Infer what TRANQUIL means. What are other words that mean the same thing?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 34: The Mother
In this chapter, Roz discovers two new things she is very good at. They give her purpose. What are these two skills?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 33: The Garden
In this chapter, Roz uses the help of burrowing friends, like moles and groundhogs to dig holes. Can you name more animals that burrow? Who did Peter Brown forget?
Also, Roz plans a surprising way to meet her neighbors on the island. What do you think of her plan?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 32: The Deer
Roz knows that she can't make it on the island alone. She has become very skillful at knowing who to go to for help and how to ask. What is something that you've had to ask for help with?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 31: The First Night
The Wild Robot
Chapter 30: The Nest
The Beavers have agreed to help Roz build a home for her little family. In today's chapter they begin to discuss their plans. We invite you to begin a drawing of what you think Roz and Brightbill's new home will look like. How will they stay warm and safe?

Chapter 3
What is a robot? Do you have a robot in your home? Can robots have arms? Legs? Tentacles? Teeth?
We will meet a robot in today's chapter. This robot is the MAIN CHARACTER of Wild Robot!
Draw a picture of what you think the robot from the one surviving crate looks like. How do you think the otters will react?

Chapter 4
The Wild Robot
Chapter 5: The Robot Gravesite
Think about these questions after listening to the chapter.
In today's chapter, Roz takes her first steps. Do you remember taking your first steps?
Roz uses her "damage sensors" to find safety. How do animals find safety? In what ways did the otters help themselves stay safe in this chapter?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 6: The Climb
Have you ever been called a "Copy Cat?" How do you feel when someone copies you?
Roz doesn't have a caregiver to help her survive ...yet. Roz must learn on her own. Roz copies a skilled master to help her climb. Do you remember who it was?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 7: The Wilderness
This chapter has me thinking about shapes.
Challenge: Draw a picture of a forest with irregular, organic shapes... or what Mac Barnett (author of "Square" and "Triangle") calls "the shapes with no names." Then do a COMPARISON. Draw the same forest with regular, geometric shapes.
Email or post what you create on Seesaw, if you feel like sharing.
The Wild Robot
Chapter 8: The Pinecones
Roz experiences "something like annoyance" in today's chapter.
Have you ever been annoyed? What annoys you?
Before Roz was interrupted, she was taking-in the forest. Some people call this practice "forest bathing." Grown-ups, here's a brief video that describes forest bathing.

There is lots of suspense in this chapter! You might feel inspired to capture the action with a drawing, painting or interpretative dance! Surprise us!
The Wild Robot
Chapter 13: The Aftermath
What is an instinct? How do animals use their instincts to survive? Do you have instincts? If yes, how do you use your instincts?
Roz does not have instincts which makes her very VULNERABLE on this island. How will our friend compensate or make up for the fact that she has no instincts. How will she survive?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 14: The Bears
There is a lot of action and suspense in this chapter.
Before you listen, make some predictions about how the bears will behave when they see Roz.
As I read the chapter, pay careful attention listening for describing words that the author uses to build suspense and excitement.
Make a list of all the describing you noticed and talk about what they mean.
The Wild Robot
Chapter 15: The Escape
The Wild Robot
Chapter 16: The Pine Tree
Authors (almost) never put a chapter or part in their book that you won't need to have a deeper understanding of their BIG IDEA.
The first time I read this, I thought, huh, why did Peter Brown add this part? It doesn't seem important. I should have known better.
Remember Roz is always learning, collecting and computing new information. What is Roz learning from the pine tree and its friend in this chapter? Wonder how she will use this information later.
The Wild Robot
Chapter 17: The Camouflaged Insect
Roz notices everything's SUPERPOWERS. Noticing is one of HER many superpowers.
What does she notice about the insect in this chapter? What important lesson do you think the insect taught her to help her survive?
The Wild Robot
Chapter 18: The Camouflaged Robot
In this chapter Roz decides to camouflage herself.
Click on the link below to see how other creatures camouflage. I'm not sure Roz is as skillful as these animals. What do you think?

Chapter 19: The Observations
Readers, Roz has perfected her copy-catting. Listen carefully to the LANDscapes described in this chapter and perhaps you will feel inspired to draw Roz hidden in one of these scenes!
If you were a bee, mouse or flower do you think you would notice Roz? Do you think Roz is blending in as well as she thinks she is?
The Wild Robot
Chapter20: The Language of Animals
As we humans have slowed down the last few weeks, have you been hearing more nature sounds? Do you hear the wind louder today? Do you hear the birds chattering more in the morning?
Here on the island, Roz is learning the language of the animals while in disguise. She is even beginning to understand the porcupines!
We have a wonderful opportunity to pay attention to the language of nature now too!
The Wild Robot
Chapter 21: The Introduction
Generally, creatures are afraid of what they do not understand. Any change can feel scary.
In this chapter, we see how many of the creatures on the island are led by fear. We, as readers, know that Roz is safe and if you are like me, you are already quite fond of her. The creatures do not know her yet.
Pretend that you are Roz. How would you convince the animals that you are not a threat or something to be scared of?
How would you prove to your community that you can be trusted?
How could it help Roz if the animals were on her side? How could being on Roz's side help the animals?

Crazy Hair Day Read Aloud!
We all have thoughts and feelings BUT we teach others through our actions and behaviors. Roz learned important survival skills from The Crab and The Stick Insect. "Mama! Mama!" peeped a tiny, muffled voice within the egg."
This is a very important sentence in Chapter 25. Why is it important? What do you think will happen when this egg hatches?
Sweet times are coming for our robot friend, Roz.
It's a good time to jump into the story if you haven't started yet.

Chapter 26: The Performer
Favorite T-shirt Day Read Aloud!
This Chapter is a reminder that one of the best ways to show an understanding of what you’re reading is to ACT IT OUT! A new character is introduced to us today who has a very interesting creature power. Listen carefully to 3 things this character does and try performing or acting it out. Ask someone else in your family to ACT IT OUT for you too!
Below is a video of this animal using its creature power in the real world. This is not a high-quality video but it is a clear example of how this skill is being used to survive.
