My name is Laura Matheson, MS, LMFT and I want to greet you on you journey towards healing. At New Hope Therapy PLLC our goal is to be a place where you can feel fully known and accepted, while being challenged to move towards new hope for the future. Let's see if we could be a good fit for therapy!
Finding the right therapist is often a daunting task. I treat a combination of adults, teens, couples, families and children with varying concerns. Marriage and Family Therapists look at the issues through a systematic lens. This means they consider the ways in which individual's families have made them who they are; both the good and the bad. We will also work together to highlight your strengths and how they can help you overcome barriers to your goals.
Each individual that comes into therapy should have an experience as unique as they are. I have training in a wide variety of techniques including Restoration Therapy (RT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Combining these together I work to create a holistic treatment that suits each individual. In general, when working with children, teens, and families, I use a combination of CBT, parent training, games, art, and toys. Through these means I assist them to develop stronger relationships, express hard emotions, and change distressing behaviors. With adults, I largely use a combination of CBT and RT. Using the RT model, we will work together to understand how violations of love and trust in your life have led to destructive relational patterns and emotional pain. In turn, we will strive to develop new self-messages to change the way you interact with others. It has been amazing to see the healing that can happen when people feel understood and supported emotionally by those who are most important in their lives.
Though I have experience treating a wide variety of mental health concerns, my areas of specialty are children's issues, woman's issues, bilingual therapy (Spanish and English), trauma, anxiety, parenting, Adjustment disorders, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I identify as a Christian and offer my clients the opportunity to incorporate faith into our treatment. Please note that my office is a safe place for people of all backgrounds, and religion will only be incorporated at your choosing. If you are struggling with an active addiction, Bulimia, Anorexia, or have made a suicide attempt in the last year I will not have the resources to assist you. If we determine you need a different level of care or a different provider I will be happy to help you in finding someone who best meet your needs.
I hold a M.S in Marital and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary. Prior to that I received a Bachelor of Arts Double Major in Psychology and Interpersonal Communications with a minor in Spanish from the University of Washington (UW). While at UW I assisted with the qualitative analysis of a study under Marsha Linehan, the inventor of DBT. Since becoming a therapist, I have worked in a variety of settings including a group practice called Full Circle (now Lifestance) and a community mental health center called Sea Mar. At Sea Mar I gained much experience assisting those who have undergone a variety of trauma's. Now with my own practice I hope to bring all the best of those setting to you.
Please note I am licensed by Washington State as a Marriage and Family Therapist license number LF61188799. I can not provide therapy to people living outside of Washington state at this time.
