In 2015 backing accidents accounted for 34% of all non-occupant deaths and 284 fatalities in total among only non-traffic accidents (Meaning accidents that do not occur on public roadways). (NHTSA Crash Stats: Non-Traffic Surveillance: Fatality and Injury Statistics in Non-Traffic Crashes in 2015).

Adding a sufficient light source to the rear of a vehicle allows for the driver to have a much better view of any obstructions that may lead to property damage. Many older vehicles use traditional light bulbs instead of LEDs, which are not bright and can burn out.

Our product is currently in the early stages of development. The product will be compatible with several different vehicles and will only need a few minutes to install.

Overview

We sent our survey to both upperclassmen and faculty members at New Fairfield High School. Over a course of two week we collected a total of 75 responses, 37 faculty responses and 38 student responses.

The results show that teenagers are more likely to get in an accident, as 74.4% of our teenage respondents claimed it is more difficult to see in the dark while reversing due to a lack of illumination, compared to 56.8% of staff member responses. Overall, 72% of participants wish they had brighter lights on the rear of their vehicle
