A disciple is someone who knows Jesus, is following Jesus, and helps others to know and follow Jesus. John Mark Comer in his book, Practicing the Way, describes the goal of a disciple as to be with Jesus, become like him, and do what he did. Let's be more specific. What is the destination of a disciple? What are the methods and practices to achieve this destination?
Destination - What is the mission and vision of a disciple?
Jesus Saturation: They can articulate the vision of Jesus Saturation (Eph. 1:22-23; Hab. 2:14).
Gospel Fluent: They are gospel-fluent (Romans 1:8, 16).
Gospel Identity: They are living out of their identity in Christ as a family of missionary servants who make disciples that make disciples (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Vehicles - What is the preferred method for achieving their mission and vision?
All-of-life discipleship. They are living...
Life with Jesus: They are practicing the presence of Jesus in the everyday rhythms of life (Mark 1:16-18).
Life in Community: They participate in gatherings, a house church, and a discipleship group in the everyday rhythms of life (Acts 2:42-47).
Life on Life: They are living life-on-life with at least one other person to reproduce the life of Christ in the everyday rhythms of life (2 Timothy 2:1-2).
Life on Mission: They are on mission in the everyday rhythms of life (Acts 1:8).
Practices - What are the practices and tools of a disciple?
They are living out these practices of a disciple (i.e. key practices of Jesus).
Scripture - They study, meditate on, and apply Scripture (Psalm 19:7-11, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 1 Peter 2:2, Hebrews 4:12-14, Hebrews 5:11-14, James 1:25).
Service - They demonstrate the gospel by giving their life away (Matt. 10:1,8).
Share - They declare the gospel by speaking the truth in love (Acts 1:8; 2 Cor. 2:14-17).
Supplication & other prayers - They intercede and interact with God through prayer (Luke 11:1-13).
They know and use the Jesus Saturation tools.
