Law Enforcement I

Course Description
Protective Services / Law, Public Safety and Security Level I
Prerequisite: Grade 10 or 11
This is a rigorous course designed for students interested in a career in law enforcement and/or public safety/public and private security. This course will present students an opportunity to learn various aspects of police procedures. Students will learn and participate in practical demonstrations of search and arrest techniques and will become familiar with forensic investigations. Students will become familiar with report writing, evidence collection and testifying in court. Students will learn community police patrol practices. Students will learn case laws and how case laws apply to and govern police work. Students will receive an overview of natural and manmade disasters (including terrorism and the importance of a cross-agency coordination. Time permitting, students will participate in field trips and will receive guest speaker instruction/demonstrations from police, firefighting and/or emergency technician professionals.
*Physical fitness is required for this course.

Students will be graded every two weeks on their notebooks. Students will put all their current events, class work, handouts, and notes in their notebooks. This is an easy way to make a 100 every two weeks.
Daily Grades:
Students will be graded every day in five categories. Students will be graded on Time Management, Work Ethic/Participation, Attitude/Respect, Appearance, and Professional Development. The class participation grade will be used so students can attain the highest level of learning possible. When we have holidays or school is canceled the student will be graded on a class activity. This may be a case study or classwork assignment. The class activity will be worth 20 points for the day.
The daily grade is determined by a point system consisting of
1. Time Management 4 Points Maximum
2. Work Ethics/Participation 4 Points Maximum
3. Appearance 4 Points Maximum
4. Attitude/Respect 4 Points Maximum
5. Professional Development 4 Points Maximum
Rating Scale:
Students may earn 20 points per day. The student will have an evaluation grade every week. If the student is absent he will have make up work to get his or her points. If no make-up work is turned in, the student will receive a zero for the day he or she was absent.
Point System:
Below is a detailed explanation of the five daily grade categories listed above. These are the minimal expectations and other areas will be discussed and addressed as necessary.
Time Management- The expectations for this area include, but not limited to
1. Attendance
2. Being on time for class
3. Having materials necessary for doing assigned work
4. Students are expected to start work promptly upon arrival.
5. All class work and out of class assignments are included in this area.
Work Ethic/Participation: The expectations of this area include
1. Keeping busy in class and doing assigned work.
2. Listening and paying attention during discussion.
3. Taking part during class activities and class discussion.
4. Working and doing your part in assigned group activities.
5. Doing what is expected at all times.
Attitude/Respect: The expectations of this area include
1. Respect yourself, peers, and instructor.
2. Using a “handle” on the gender being addressed.
3. Maintaining a positive attitude all times.
4. Have respect for your school, class, and commitment to the LPSS course.
Appearance: The expectations of this area include
1. Maintaining a neat appearance in the way you wear your clothes.
A. No pants below the waist. This includes baggy or sagging pants.
B. Shoes are to be tied if they have laces.
C. Jeans can be worn, but must not be torn or ripped unless approved for hands-on
activities.
D. No tank tops, tube tops, etc.
E. No hats or bandannas are to be worn or displayed
F. Gang and racial signs and related connotations will not be allowed at anytime. This includes gestures, emblems, and logos.
G. When attending class functions or field trips, students must wear collared shirts and khaki pants.
H. Shirts are to be worn tucked into pants/skirts. Furthermore, students are required to wear pants with belt loops.
J. No excessive jewelry. No visible body piercing allowed with the exception of
females wearing earrings. (To be explained in detail during orientation.)
*******Failure to follow dress code will result in a 0 for the day.
Professional Development (Leadership)- The expectations for this area include
1. A combination of all the above.
2. Willingness to help and work with others when asked, or needed
3. Taking responsibility for your actions.
4. Taking action when necessary
5. Being part of a solution, not part of the problem.
Physical Fitness:
In this course students will be required to participate in physical fitness training. Physical training will be conducted once or twice a week. Each student will be required to have a change of proper clothing. During inclement weather or extreme temperatures Fitness will be conducted indoors. (Examples of proper clothing will be discussed during orientation.) Physical Fitness will consist of running, sit ups, pushups, walking, jump rope, etc.
