I am Dr. Jonathan Fowler, English teacher here at Mid-Carolina High School. I am married to my beautiful wife, Stefanie, and we have five fur-babies: two dogs (Dirk and Macie) and three cats (Sophie, Roxy, and Hildi).
Although I am new to the school, I am not new to teaching or the area. This will be my 14th year teaching and 11th living in Newberry. I have previously taught at Airport High School (2010 - 2020) and Greenwood High School (2007 - 2010). I am a triple-graduate of the University of South Carolina, receiving my BA in English in 2005, my Masters of Teaching in 2007, and my Ed. D. with a focus on curriculum and instruction in 2019.
Initially, I was unsure as to what I wanted to do when I "grew up." I tried majoring in psychology, and though I enjoyed it, it wasn't for me. I then tried computer science, thinking that I could be a programmer and make good money. However, I am not one to sit behind a desk due to my...high energy level. So, after a round-about college career, I finally found my calling in education. During my lengthy college search, I worked a number of jobs, doing everything from working in a grocery store to screen-printing to custodial work to mosquito control. In fact, one of the only places I didn't work was in a restaurant.
While I do not recommend taking my approach, I learned a great deal from each of these experiences, and I work to incorporate all that I have learned into how and what I teach.
In my spare time, I like to work with my hands. I enjoy carpentry, working on cars, and playing the guitar (although I haven't played in years). I do enjoy reading a good book, typically fantasy, but like many of you, it has to grab me quickly or I'll get bored. Basically, I stay busy because there is always something else to do.
