Language Arts

Reading will be taught through the workshop model. This model encourages students to choose their own books as well as providing significant amounts of time for them to read independently. In third grade, children transition from learning to read to reading to learn. The students will be immersed in fiction books and expository nonfiction as they work on vocabulary development, discovering main idea, recognizing text infrastructure, and thinking critically. The units of study will be as follows:

•Building a Reading Life

•Mystery: Foundational Skills and Disguise

•Reading to Learn: Grasping Main Ideas and Text Structures

•Character Studies

•Research Clubs

Third graders are not too old to be read to, so share some quality time with your child by reading to him or her.

Writing will also be taught using the workshop model. Students will write everyday in their writer’s notebooks. They will also learn how to take pieces of writing through the writing process-prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. The writing units of study for the year are as follows:

•Launching the Writing Workshop

•Narrative Writing

•Opinion Writing

•Informational Writing

•Baby Literary Essays
