This simulation exercise, which asks participants to build a thriving community, challenges participants to consider issues of community to access and control over resources. The session is aligned with Goal 11 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals focused on sustainable cities and communities and connects these ideas to the main themes of the film. It will cultivate critical and ethical thinking and encourage collaborative leadership.

We will consider facts from the film and look at data (packets provided) to discover where the city, in one of the richest states in the richest country in the world, stands in terms of five of the SDG's: Health and Wellbeing; Sustainable Communities; Clean Water; Responsible Consumption and Production; Clean and Affordable Energy.

This post-film discussion examines The Sacrifice Zone through the lens of environmental racism in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood. Participants explore how policy and power concentrate environmental hazards in immigrant, people of color and working-class communities, resulting in disproportionate impacts on health, education and economics. The discussion will highlight environmental justice as an ongoing civil rights issue rooted in systems.
