Roy Thomas Buttry, son of William Charles Buttry and Emma Mae Addison, was born January 27, 1913, at Thomasboro, Illinois. Later that year, his family moved from Illinois and settled in New Albany Township, in Story County, Iowa. He attended rural schools in the Colo area.
On November 12, 1938, he married Helen Marie Hickman, daughter of John Edwin Hickman and Mildred M. Riddle, in Colo, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in Story and Boone counties, where their four children were born. They later moved Nevada.
For over 25 years, Roy owned and operated Roy's Texaco Service, also known as Roy's Phillips 66 in the earlier years. The full-service gas station, mechanic's shop and tow service was located 1421 Lincoln Way in Nevada. As part of his way to give back to the community and inspire youth to take up the trade of being a mechanic, Roy participated for 10 years in the Nevada Distributive Education Clubs of America program, sponsored by the Nevada Community School District. He retired and closed his business in the fall of 1978.
He served as a volunteer on the Nevada Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years, 15 years as assistant fire chief. After his many years of service, Mr, Buttry was made an honorary, lifetime member of the fire department.
Roy Buttry was elected mayor of the City of Nevada and served one four-year term. He was defeated in his bid for re-election as mayor; and later sought Democratic nomination for the Story County Board of Supervisors.
On January 6, 2001, Roy's wife, Helen, died. Roy Thomas Buttry died January 12, 2008 in Nevada. He left to survive him two daughters and two sons.
