#68, 69 & 70 Herbert Allen “Herb” Shearman (1898-1984) 1966-1977


Herbert Allen Shearman, son of James Taylor Shearman and Emma Eddy, was born October 12, 1898 at Dow City, Crawford County, Iowa. His father was a telegrapher for the Chicago Northwestern railroad and, as such, the family relocated frequently. He graduated from Kirkman High School in Kirkman, Shelby County, Iowa in 1916. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I and, upon discharge, attended Des Moines University.

He removed to Nevada in 1937 for several years associating himself with the business life of Nevada in different capabilities before working for the Story County Treasurer’s Office. On March 22, 1941, he married Nevada native Mary Sorensen, daughter of Rasmus Sorensen and Bodil Anderson, in Nevada and the couple made their home here.

During World War II he re-enlisted in the Army and, following discharge, he was employed by the State of Iowa as an auditor for 26 years. He served three four-year terms as mayor of Nevada retiring in 1978. In his retirement years he worked briefly for Coover-Huebner Chevrolet Oldsmobile. He was a member of the American Legion in addition to several community and fraternal organizations.

Herbert Shearman died on February 27, 1984 in Nevada, Story County, Iowa. He was survived by his wife and one daughter.
