Fred Emil Hansen, son of Thomas P. Hansen and Nathalia Werfel, was born November 14, 1875 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His mother died when he was young and when 12 years of age, he came to live with the Henry Thompson family, who lived just south of Roland, Story County, Iowa. He attended school in the Roland schools and took up teaching in both the rural and Roland schools.
He took a course of study at Iowa State college while still teaching and was made principal of the Roland schools in 1899. He served two terms as Story County School Superintendent beginning in 1900.
That same year on June 6, he married Anna R. Hegland, a Roland native, daughter of Ole O, Hegland and Ingeborg Johnson, in Roland. The couple established their home in Nevada. He sold school books for a time but then decided to pursue the study of law. He entered the law offices of Judge E. M. McCall to read the law. Having studied for a long period of time previously, he was admitted to the bar in 1906.
Fred E. Hansen set up his own law practice in Nevada. He served one term mayor of Nevada from 1911 to 1912, two terms as Story County Attorney, was a member of the Draft Board during World War I, and was active in church affairs.
Mr. Hansen died suddenly of a heart attack on May 4, 1941 in Nevada, Story County, Iowa. He was survived by his wife and one daughter, Margaret Jayne (Hansen) Rose
