Frank B. Ambrose, son of Benjamin Franklin Ambrose and Mamie L. Allen, was born May 14, 1907 in Nevada, Story County, Iowa. He obtained his education in the Nevada schools graduating from Nevada High School in 1925. He attended the University of Iowa and Northwestern University and was graduated from the Lincoln College of Law in Springfield, Illinois. Following law school, he was a claims adjuster for Employees Mutual Insurance Company in Chicago.
He married Gertrude Martha Sayles, daughter of Arthur Bishop Sayles and Mary Jane Moore, on April 13, 1940 in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa. Six months later on October 1, 1940, Mr. Ambrose was admitted to the Iowa Bar but did not immediately settle down to practice law. Early in their marriage, the couple lived in Chicago, Davenport and Shreveport, Louisiana.
In 1946, the Ambrose family returned to Frank’s home town of Nevada, He set up his law office at 1036 ½ Sixth Street above the then Dillin’s Department Store. In 1955 he moved his offices to 511 J Avenue in Nevada,
In August of 1954, Mayor Clifford W. Padellford, submitted his resignation and Frank B. Ambrose, as City Attorney for Nevada, was selected as his successor at a special meeting of the city council. When elections came about the following November, Frank B. Ambrose was elected mayor and served two terms in that position from 1955 to 1959. He later served on Nevada City Council,
Mr. Ambrose practiced law until his retirement in 1986. He died on April 12, 2002 in Nevada, Iowa, He was survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
