Daniel H. McCord, son of William McCord and Barbara Jackson, was born in Ohio in 1829. He married Roseanna B. Alexander, daughter of William R. Alexander and Rachel Dusthammer, on January 12, 1860 in Huron County, Ohio. Shortly after his marriage he and his wife moved to Black Hawk County, Iowa where he took up farming. Seeking to better his position he removed briefly to Rock County, Wisconsin before returning to Iowa locating in Nevada where he continued to farm for some years. He was well known and respected being elected mayor a scant year after arriving in Nevada. The family remained in this community from about 1872 until some time after 1885 during which time Mr. McCord served one term as mayor of Nevada in 1873.
He removed to Great Bend, Barton County, Kansas and engaged in training and handling trotting horses, being considered one of best horsemen in the west. He had experienced financial reverses during his last few years that cost him all the property that he had accumulated during his lifetime.
On March 26, 1893 he took a high-spirited horse out in a trotting sulky. As he neared a railroad crossing west of Great Bend, an approaching train the horse spooked and Mr. McCord was thrown against a post. Broken ribs punctured his lungs and he died of internal injuries the next morning. He was survived by one son, William Allen McCord, his wife having passed away on March 17, 1889.
