Rev. Carman Edward Lookingbill, son of Henry Augustus Lookingbill and Elizabeth Hoff, was born April 25, 1876 on a farm near Panora, Guthrie County, Iowa. He attended the county schools of Guthrie County, Iowa. He left the farm at the age of twenty-one and entered the memorial dealer.

On September 26, 1900, he married Addie Reitz, daughter of Conrad Z. Reitz and Elizabeth Keller, in Maxwell, Iowa. The couple lived in Sac county three years and then moved back to Maxwell, Iowa. In 1910 he became an ordained minister of the Brethren Church in Maxwell. In later years, he became identified with the Methodist Church, his previous ordination being accepted.

In 1911 he entered the electric utility business and carried on both the memorial and utility businesses until 1925, when he sold out the utility business.

He served as mayor of Maxwell, and in 1919 moved to Nevada. He was elected mayor of Nevada and served two terms from 1923 to 1926. He was elected as state respresentative from the 52nd District (Story and Boone Counties) for three terms and served from January 1933 until January 1939.

After serving in the legislature, Rev. Lookingbill returned to his memorial dealership in Nevada. He remained active in the church performing funerals, baptisms and marriages as requested. He served one more term as mayor of Nevada from 1943 to 1944.

Ada (Reitz) Lookingbill died on June 10, 1956 in Nevada and Rev. Carman E. Lookingbill followed her on March 5, 1959 in Nevada. He was survived by his daughter, Marie Winifred (Lookingbill) Loucks.
