Students who have met eligibility for special education services aged 3 through 5 are served in the Early Childhood Special Education Program located at Weber Elementary School. Students attend classes 1/2 day, 3-5 days a week, based on need. Currently there are 3 ECSE classrooms, which each have a morning session and an afternoon session, allowing 6 classes for ECSE students. Morning classes are 7:50 am to 10:50 am and afternoon is 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Transportation is provided for students with IEPs. Each class can accept two peer role models, based on DIAL scores from a screening by Nevada R-V Parents As Teachers and completion of a peer model application. Peer role models pay a fee to attend. Only partial transportation is provided for these students. This option is part of reverse main-streaming.
The teachers are involved in collaborative planning and cooperative learning. Emerging Language and Literacy Curriculum is utilized in the early childhood programs.
Students are identified through the district's Early Childhood screening and referrals from the Parents as Teachers Program, First Steps referrals, area professionals, and parents. State guidelines mandate that services cannot begin before a child's third birthday. Referrals, evaluations, and placement of students is an ongoing process throughout the school year. Support services, such as speech/language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and vision impairment services, are provided based on the child's individual needs.
