“Cancer is as unique as the person fighting it”, this is why we need to have a personalized approach to cancer treatment. With the exception of a few biomarker-driven therapies, most patients are treated with chemo or radiotherapy and many times go through rounds of trial-and-error approaches to find the best treatment. One of our major goals in the Lab is to develop a test to help MDs choose the best available therapy for each individual patient, using zebrafish Avatars.

“Cada Cancro é tão único quanto a pessoa que o está combater”, é por esta razão que é necessário ter uma abordagem personalizada para o tratamento do cancro. Com exceção de algumas terapias dirigidas com bio-marcadores, a maioria dos doentes são tratados com quimio ou radioterapia e muitas vezes são sujeitos a abordagens de tentativa e erro até encontrar o melhor tratamento. Um dos nossos principais objetivos no laboratório é desenvolver um teste para ajudar os médicos oncologistas a escolher a melhor terapia disponível para cada doente, usando Avatares de peixe-zebra.

The Lab also investigates the cellular and molecular interactions that occur between human tumor cells and zebrafish innate immune cells. Innate immune cells are the first line of defense of the organism against infection, damage or any other threats, and are highly present in the tumor ecosystem. These cells can behave as “good cops” (protecting the host against cancer) or as corrupted “bad cops” (helping the tumor). Our goal is to understand these processes and use the zebrafish xenografts to discover new therapies to be combined with immunotherapy.

O laboratório também investiga as interações celulares e moleculares que ocorrem entre as células tumorais humanas e as células imunes do peixe-zebra. As células imunes inatas são a primeira linha de defesa do organismo contra infecções, danos ou outras ameaças, e estão altamente representadas no ecossistema do tumor. Estas células podem comportar-se como "bons polícias" (protegendo o hospedeiro contra o cancro) ou como "policias corruptos" que ajudam o tumor. O nosso objetivo é entender estes processos e usar os Avatares de peixe-zebra para descobrir novas terapias.
