Project Child Find is a free referral service and public awareness campaign designed to help identify unserved or underserved children and youth, ages 3 to 21, who may have disabilities. These disabilities may be physical, sensory, emotional, communicative, cognitive, or social in nature.
Public school systems offer services for preschool-aged children (ages 3 to 5) who show delays in areas such as motor skills, communication, social-emotional development, or cognitive abilities. These children may be eligible for special education and related services.
For children from birth to age three, New Jersey’s Early Intervention System provides services for those with developmental delays or disabilities, along with support for their families.
For children ages 3 to 21, local school districts are responsible for providing a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to eligible students.
Upon receiving a written request for evaluation, the school district’s Child Study Team has 20 calendar days to meet with the parent(s) or guardian(s). At this meeting, the team and the parent(s) will determine whether an evaluation is warranted and, if so, what the evaluation will include.
