Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA)

Legislative History of Major FERPA Provisions - Last updated June 2002

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal privacy law that gives parents certain protections with regard to their children's education records, such as report cards, transcripts, disciplinary records, contact and family information, and class schedules.

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

COPPA restricts collection of personal information from children younger than 13. The primary goal of COPPA being to place parents in control of what information about their children is collected online.

Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA)

CIPPA was created by Congress to address issues relating to children's access to harmful and/or obscene information on the Internet. If schools or libraries received federal funding from the Erate program for discounts on Internet access and/or equipment necessary for maintaining networks, they must certify the use of blocking or filtering measures. Schools must also provide education to minors regarding appropriate online behavior.
