WHAT GRADES WILL NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING SERVE?
Students in grades 9th through 12th in the 2025-2026 school year may apply for NCS Virtual Learning. We are not currently offering virtual learning for Elementary & Middle School students at this time.
HOW MUCH DOES NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING COST ?
NCS Virtual Learning is one of the many free programs offered to students of the Nelson County Schools. Students may participate with no cost to the student or your family.
WHAT TECHNOLOGY IS REQUIRED FOR NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
Each student in NCS Virtual Learning will receive and utilize a Nelson County Schools Chromebook. Families will need to provide internet access in order for students to utilize the Chromebook device. Please contact the Nelson County Schools if your family needs support in gaining internet access.
WHAT WILL LEARNING LOOK LIKE IN NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
Student's academic learning will occur through a flipped instructional model. NCS Virtual Learning Leaders will provide the content learning through an online learning platform called Edgenuity, pre-recorded lessons, reading and other instructional materials, and other resources. Google Meet and in-person learning experiences will be used to provide space for students to ask questions, provide learning supports and mentoring, and engage in discussions with other students to challenge and enrich learning.
In addition to the student's content knowledge. students will be expected to conduct a semesterly Community Unite Project. These projects, individualized for your student and co-designed with the NCS Virtual Learning Leader, your student, and your family, will provide authentic space for your student to apply the learning from their academic core to personal goals that provide community or global contribution. Your NCSVirtual Learning Leader will share this process with you during your initial Family Meeting.
NCS Virtual Learning Leaders will utilize Google Classroom to share instructional materials and assignments with the student. NCS Virtual Learning Leaders will share how students and families can access specific materials during your initial Family Meeting.
WILL DIVERSE LEARNING STUDENTS BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
Yes. NCS Virtual Learning will provide instruction and support for all diverse learners who are accepted and enrolled in the program. Along with a Diverse Learning Leader to support your student and family, other services will be offered through NCS Virtual Learning based on your child's IEP, including Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy.
HOW WILL MY STUDENT'S ATTENDANCE BE TRACKED THROUGH NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
NCS Virtual Learning functions under a performance-based model, meaning that daily attendance is not tracked for students. Students are required to connect Face-to-Face through Google Meet or in person with a Connected Campus Leader once weekly at a minimum. Your NCS Virtual Learning Leader will be in contact with the student and family to ensure the student is supporting and progressing through his or her learning experiences.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE FAMILY IN NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
NCS Virtual Learning Leaders will create a learning partnership with your family to provide an individualized learning experience for your student. Open communication between the NCS Virtual Learning Leader and your family will be essential in your student's success in NCS Virtual Learning. NCS Virtual Learning Leaders will work with your family to develop a plan for communication to best meet your needs.
WHAT COMMITMENTS MUST OUR FAMILY MAKE FOR OUR STUDENT TO PARTICIPATE IN NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
Families have three commitments when enrolling their student in NCS Virtual Learning.
Families commit to at least two weekly face-to-face connect either on Google Meet or in-person between the students and the NCS Virtual Learning Leader to monitor student progress and support your family. Frequent and ongoing communication between the family and the NCS Virtual Learning Leaders is highly encouraged to provide the best experiences for your student and family.
Families commit to quarterly family meetings in-person with the NCS Virtual Learning Leader. During these Community Table meetings, students will share their reflections and growth through the program, families can share celebrations and concerns, and the NCS Virtual Learning Leader will share student's progress through his or her classwork and help the student set goals for the following quarter.
Families commit to semesterly enrollment in NCS Virtual Learning. Students who enroll in the fall are expected to participate in NCS Virtual Learning throughout the first semester. At the end of the first semester, your family can reevaluate your student's learning opportunity for the following semester.
CAN MY STUDENT PARTICIPATE IN COLLEGE & CAREER PROGRAMS OFFERED IN THE NELSON COUNTY SCHOOLS IF THEY ARE ENROLLED IN NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
Yes, it is HIGHLY encouraged. Your student is able to participate in experiences such as Dual Credit Courses, Community Collab Programs, Work-Based Learning Experiences, and courses through the Nelson County Area Technology Center. These experiences will be in-person opportunities, and are scheduled based on the program's needs.
CAN MY STUDENT PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETICS & STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS IN NCS VIRTUAL LEARNING?
Yes. Your student is able to participate in athletic and other student leadership experiences while in NCS Virtual Learning through his or her local school. Please contact your local Principal for more information.
