WELCOME TO THE BACKPACK CLASS HOMEBASE!

About Backpack Class

The purpose of the Backpack Leader in the Nelson County Schools is to connect the students and the community. Our community is full of resources, information, and learning and career opportunities, but often students have no idea what's out there! The Backpack Leader builds those connections, so students, families, and the community establish life-long relationships that benefit us all!

Student Leadership

Immersion in the community around us allows students and staff to explore their gifts and unlock potential. Here at BES we build in-class, virtual, and community experiences on three main goals: deeper learning, caretaking, and literacy. Place-based experiences produce an engagement that opens the door to deeper learning and understanding. We can reinforce that learning with literary experiences and also promote literary expression to share those adventures. And as we become more engaged with the community around us, we become more invested and interested in caring for the community and what it has to offer--students at the elementary age become LEADERS and changemakers.

Backpack Leader

As Backpack Leader for BES, I have been able to foster the development of relationships between our school and many partners in our community. Students and staff have been able to personally meet PEOPLE in our community who live, work, and learn here. As these relationships grow, students and staff are learning about this PLACE where we live and work and learn, and they have begun to make decisions about how they can impact this PLACE, where they fit in. Thus we have begun to explore our PURPOSE!
