ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH IV
English IV Advanced Placement (AP) is an advanced English course for 12th grade students. The course introduces students to college-level literary analysis and engages students in the close reading and critical analysis of literature to deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to support meaning. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of literature through themes and the stylistic and rhetorical devices of selected works, building on those skills practiced in English III AP. This course includes significant in and out of class reading and writing learning experiences. It is composed of thematic units and grounded in the study of British/world literature and individual student writing. It incorporates the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills including reading/literary study, writing, inquiry and research, listening, speaking, viewing and representing as modes of learning that are integrally related to the rigorous expectations of college readiness from College Board's AP Program. Summer reading, out-of-class reading, timed-writing and major projects are also important elements that inform the curriculum.
More information on North East's advanced placement course expectations can be found in the district's Course Catalog.
