The Gilded Age saw a democratic system that had become corrupted. The rise of political machines, the influx of immigrants, and the ability of big business to influence and sway government officials brought up issues with America's democratic system.

Third parties (political parties organized in opposition to the main two-party system of America) began to form and rally for changes that they deemed necessary for reclaiming the intent of our founders. Parties such as the Populists, and later the Progressive Party, developed ideas for safeguarding democracy and lobbied the U.S. government to implement these ideas and changes.

Our third-party system has continued to gain momentum following this period. As a result, we still see major parties who adopt issues brought forth by these third parties to incorporate not only their voters but the reforms that they deem needed in our American democratic system.
