Not Nothing
Alex is a twelve year old boy who has been assigned to spend his summer volunteering at a senior living facility learns unexpected lessons that change the trajectory of his life. To say Alex has had it rough is an understatement. His fatherβs gone, his mother is struggling with mental health issues, and heβs now living with an aunt and uncle who are less than excited to have him. Almost everyone treats him as though he doesnβt matter at all, like heβs nothing. So when a kid at school actually tells him heβs nothing, Alex snaps, and gets violent. Fortunately, his social worker pulls some strings and gets him a job at a nursing home for the summer rather than being sent to juvie. There, he meets Josey, the 107-year-old Holocaust survivor who stopped bothering to talk years ago. As Alex comes back again and again to hear more, an unlikely bond grows between them.Β
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
Once upon a time, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely. When Edward is lost one day, he begins a long and perilous journey. One that brings him into the lives of a travelling train-rider, an elderly couple living by the sea, and another little girl.Β
Along the way, we are shown a true miracle: even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again. Edward has a lot to learn about life and love but will he allow his heart to break in order to learn?
Be sure to bring your books back to school each Friday! 5th graders are allowed to check out 2 books at a time. There may be times where Mrs. Smith will let you check out 3 or even 4 if you are showing library book responsibility. Students will need to check out ONE chapter book (at their personal level) for nightly reading, and then one book of their choice.Β
You can either:
Recheck your book (2 times) - it still needs to be brought to the library on library days so it can be rechecked to you
Return it and check out another one
