Technology Behind Social Media

Social media has a variety of platforms. There are many different ways social media appears in our day-to-day lives in the forms of email, social networking, instant messaging and chat, telecommunications, videoconferencing, forums, and blogs. In modern society we find ourselves surrounded by the influence of social media. But what really is social media, and how does it work?

Social media is websites or applications that enable users to create and share content and to participate in social networking. But to me, social media is a great way to connect with friends and people from anywhere. Social media interactions are becoming increasingly important as technology is adapting to include a more human-friendly element, including social-based operating systems and communication-oriented software applications. A social-based operating system is a new software platform that focuses on a person's relationships with others. Examples of these are Myspace and Twitter. Communication-oriented software applications is a loose category of systems and apps that allows users to exchange files and text, audio, and video messages via the cloud or local network from various devices. Examples of these are Gmail and Zoom. But how do you navigate these complex systems and applications?

To start understanding how to navigate social media you have to understand what the algorithms are. In social media, algorithms are the of sorting the information that appears on the user’s screen like posts and comments. The algorithms are what allow social networking to prioritize the information you are most likely to want to see. However, to accomplish this every time you like, comment, or post something, the algorithm will change slightly as it learns more about the content you like.

There are different ways to use social media and increase your online presence. Some tips include:

  1. Using the right apps for you (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc..): This is an important step that is often overlooked. Different social media apps are used for varying purposes. Facebook is mostly used for connecting with friends, colleagues, family, most complete strangers by sharing pictures and videos. On the other hand Pinterest is meant to provide people with inspiration and ideas for their interests and hobbies.

  2. Promoting your accounts and making sure people are interacting with your profile and following it: The more people are aware of your presence on social media, the bigger the account will become. An example of this would be plugging your blog on your twitter feed.

  3. Paying attention to what is trending: You can do this by piggybacking on popular social media trends and using trending hashtags, this can help your account to become viewed by the audience on a much larger scale.

  4. Focus on eye-catching visuals: This will allow your account to stand out from others. You can do this by sharing images that will connect with users, like behind-the-scenes photos and people using your products.

  5. Actively engaging with your audience: This is a vital part of growing your social media profile so that your social media account(s) foster a community. Meaning when someone comments on your posts, you should reply to them or at least like their comments. You should also show appreciation to your followers by thanking them for sharing user-generated content. If you engaging with your followers not only will you increase your social media presence but it will help you develop real relationships with customers.
