Thermal paste is an overlooked part of the computer. While it doesn’t actually process anything, it is critical to have it to allow the computer to function properly. Thermal paste is just a paste that is designed to transfer heat from the die of a CPU or GPU to a heatsink and fan. There are several ways to apply thermal paste, so I made a video describing the different methods and why they work.

Not all thermal pastes are the same. They can contain Zinc oxide, Silicone oil, Ceramic, Aluminum, Copper, Silver, Graphite, Carbon nanoparticles, and various anti-oxidation agents. While different brands of thermal paste have different ingredients, they all function in the same way, to transfer heat. If you really want a deep dive into different thermal pastes, click here.
