You’ve probably heard the age old advice that dropping your wet phone into a bowl of uncooked rice will fix it. The thought process is that since rice is absorbent, it will remove the water residing inside and outside of the phone.
But is that actually true? The answer is no, but for two main reasons.
The thought process is actually correct, rice is absorbent and might be able to absorb water. But the first issue lies within the small particles of rice. They can get into charging ports and other small openings in the phone, which becomes very difficult to remove.
The second issue is that the rice can scratch the screen and case on the phone.
But don’t worry, there is an alternative solution. The first thing you want to do is clean the outside with a dry cloth, like your shirtsleeve. Remove any case or other attachments and place them to the side to dry. You also want to remove the sim card and turn the phone off. After you’ve done that, place the phone on a plate with a paper towel wrapped tightly around it., and leave it somewhere dry. It's important to note that leaving the phone in direct sunlight can introduce new problems, so it's best not to do that.
Most phones today are water-resistant, meaning they can handle some exposure to water without damage. But that doesn't mean they can be submerged in water. You can use the following charts to determine if your phone is waterproof.
In conclusion, putting your phone in rice will do more bad than good. It's best to prevent water damage by not holding your phone over water, or exposing it to moisture. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
