Reserve a rental instrument from David French Music Co. (our contracted vendor) or another music company.
Contact French Music Co. to rent your instrument or the dealer of your choice. Please identify your child as a Needham Public School student to take advantage of the listed rental prices from French Music Co. See the Rental Information Section for more information.
Instruments will be delivered to your child’s school and distributed during their first lesson.
Note: If renting an instrument will present a financial hardship to your family please reach out to your teacher and a scholarship instrument can be arranged.
About David French:
French Music Co. has been named by the School Committee as our District’s primary provider of rental instruments. French Music makes weekly visits directly to our schools to service instruments, deliver supplies, and address other needs. You are free to secure an instrument from any music dealer of your choice and we urge you to consider establishments that specialize in musical instruments with the ability to repair instruments on site. If you plan to purchase an instrument please consult with your musician's teacher.

Q: What time should I get to my lesson?
A: Arrive 5 minutes early to your lesson time. This provides time to set up and start the lesson on time!
Q: What are the expectations for lessons and rehearsals?
Come prepared—have your book, instrument, necessary supplies, and pencil, and be on time.
Use time wisely—participate in lessons and work on your assignments at home.
Q: What do I do if I have the early lesson?
A: You will remain with your teacher until the start of the school day. Please bring something quiet (a book, magazine, or homework) to do during the other group's lesson.
Q: Are there concerts?
A: Yes! Students will have a winter and spring concert. Information will come from your school band teacher!
Q: How will I know what to practice?
A: After each class, your teacher will give specific songs and tasks to complete during the week.
Q: Should I play my instrument at home between lessons?
A: Yes! To see progress, students should practice 10-15 minutes 3-4 times between lessons.
Q: Can I participate in Band if I also want to stay in Advanced Strings?
A: Yes! Please reach out to your Advanced Strings and Band teacher so we can work out a plan to musicians to do both.
Q: How many days a week do I have a band?
A: There are two types of classes for Band: Lessons and Rehearsals. From September to December, students will have their instrument lessons once a week. See the schedule from the flyer. Starting in January, students will add band class to their schedule one day a week.
Q: I didn't take band last year as a 4th grader, can I start an instrument in 5th Grade?
A: Yes! You can start an instrument in 4th or 5th grade! For 5th-grade students, we will work hard to join the Advanced Band after our first concert so you can play with your classmates and be ready for High Rock!
