Germaine Bessard

As told by her granddaughter Monique

Monique Goodrow-Trach

I interviewed my neighbor, Monique, about her family who came from France. We mainly talked about her grandmother Germaine, but also about the rest of the family like her grandfather, mother, and uncles.

Lasting Impact

Monique's mother always tried to get her to speak French and connect with her French heritage growing up, but Monique tried her best to resist it. She didn't want to make mistakes in front of her French family, and she was initially embarrassed that her grandparents didn't speak English. But now, she is a French teacher and she feels that her family did a good job holding onto their heritage. She also hopes to be able to continue passing down her heritage to her own children.
