Interdisciplinary Learning

The Interdisciplinary Learning Initiative was a collaborative effort between the NPS and the NEF that launched an interdisciplinary academic model of learning at Needham High School (NHS). This program provided an innovative model of learning and teaching for both NHS students and faculty starting with the Greater Boston Project, an interdisciplinary senior year course, and has included an impact with smaller projects and units within other courses in the school. As part of the broad and lasting impact of the initiative, NHS is looking to expand the program even more by offering interdisciplinary courses in earlier grades, starting with 9IP. Integrated curriculum (intentionally connecting the curriculum between the courses) is what sets this program apart from learning interdisciplinary skills in isolated classes. Within 9IP some days subjects will be content specific but the greater understanding will come from application to broader themes and specific projects across the disciplines while also developing interdisciplinary skills.

Portrait of a Needham Graduate

The Needham Public Schools recently released the Portrait of a Needham Graduate competencies. The goal is for students to develop those competencies through their experiences within their schooling. The 9IP program is designed to directly teach, practice, and provide feedback on all of those competencies. It will especially focus on collaboration, addressing local and global issues through civic and community engagement, and discovering and integrating content from multiple disciplines.
