Choice Board Activities

There are several activities you can complete while you read to help you prepare for the Summer Reading Book Showcase in September, where you will engage in conversation with your peers about the book you chose to read this summer. If you run into any problems or have any questions, please check out the Family & Tech Support page, or write us an email and we'll help you along your way!

Perspective Writing

Choose a character OTHER than the main character and write a scene from her/his perspective. Be sure to include the minor character's thoughts, feelings, and actions that are complementary to the book's plot and main character. Remember - you're not changing the story, you're just writing it from someone else's point of view. For a reference, check out The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, as told from A. Wolf's perspective.

Figurative Language

Authors use figurative language in their writing to create vivid images, add deeper meaning, or emphasize a point.

For this activity, you will illustrate three uses of figurative language used throughout the novel, identify the type of figurative language being used, and give a brief explanation as to why you think the author used this technique at this time in the novel.

Flipgrid Review

Create a video book review! Be sure to include an explanation of what the book is about, what you liked about the book, and why you would recommend it to others! Add your review to this Flipgrid!

Book Soundtrack

Create a soundtrack representing different parts and characters of the novel. Design the album cover, list the songs, and write a brief explanation of what each song represents (radio versions only, please).

Comic Strip

Recreate a scene in graphic form by drawing and writing the dialogue in a comic strip. Your scene should have at least 10 panels (images) to fully represent the scene.

Note: If you are reading a graphic novel, this is not a good option for you since it is already in graphic form. HOWEVER, you may take your graphic novel and rewrite it as a traditional book!

Build a Scene

Think of a pivotal scene in or book, perhaps the climax, or a specifically detailed setting, and recreate it using objects in your house. Write a brief explanation as to what makes this scene or setting so important to the story. For reference, check out how people are recreating famous works of art!
